Making direct speech on the letter: the basic rules

Direct speech is a way of conveying someone else's statement, accompanied by author's words.

In relation to the author's words, direct speech is an independent sentence, which intonationally and in sense is connected with the author's context, and forms one with it.
Making a direct speech

1. Direct speech should be allocated inverted commas.

2. If the author's words precede direct speech, then after them a colon should be put.

Direct speech begins to write with a capital letter.

Tanya, gently embracing her mother by the shoulders, tried to calm her: "Do not worry, Mom."

3. If a direct speech precedes the words of the author, then after it should be put a comma and a dash. In the event that a direct speech contains an exclamation or a question, then it should be followed by a question mark or exclamation mark and a dash. In all cases, the author's words should begin with a capital letter. Proposals with direct speech:

"I will not give you anything to anyone," Anton whispered excitedly.

"Who's there?" Asked Pashka, frightened.

"Let's run faster!" Cried Seryozha.

The design of direct speech on the letter, when the author's words are in the middle of a direct speech, provides for the following cases:

1. If there is no punctuation mark at the place where the direct speech is broken, or there should be a colon, dash, comma or semicolon, then the author's words should be separated from both sides by commas and dashes.

"Do you know," he began, "about Williams Hobbes and his interesting destiny?"

"Do you remember," Masha began sadly, "how did you go to the forest as a child with your father?"

If at the place where the direct speech is broken, it is supposed to put a point, then after a direct speech it is necessary to put a comma and a dash, and after the author's words - a dot and a dash. The second part should be written with a capital letter. The design of direct speech in this case looks like this:

"It all ended so sadly," Masha concluded in tears, "but I did not even imagine it."

3. If on the place where the direct speech is broken, it is supposed to put an exclamation or question mark, then before the author's words it is necessary to put this sign and dash, and after the author's words - the dot and dash. The second part should be written with a capital letter.

"Why at seven?" Vanya asked, "because they change at eight."

"Ah, it's you, Nadya," said Danya, "look at this.

5. Making direct speech in the transmission of dialogue. In this case, it is usually necessary to start each replica with a new line. Before the replica you need to put a dash, and not to use quotation marks. Example of the dialog:

"Four leagues."

- Ha! It's only an hour's drive!

- The road is beautiful, podnazhmesh on the pedal, then, huh?
- Click!
- Uh! Go!

The design of direct speech in a dialogue in a different form: replicas can be written in a row, each of them in quotes and separated from other dashes. For example, "Daisy! Daisy! "-" Well, yes, Daisy; Well, what else? "-" You are getting married! "-" My God, I know! "Go away quickly!" - "But you must not. They should not ... "-" I know. But what can I do now? "-" Are you unhappy? "-" Do not torment me! I ask you to! Leave! "
