Intervertebral hernia. How to treat them?

According to statistics, today one hundred thousand people account for about 100 cases of various kinds of intervertebral hernias. However, not everyone knows about the main symptoms and methods of treating this disease. In this article, we will consider the question of what are the intervertebral hernias, as well as what kind of therapy is offered in these cases by medicine.

general information

To understand what this kind of disease is, one should go a little deeper into the anatomy of the human body. The so-called intervertebral disc is surrounded by a fibrous ring. The disease appears in the case when this fibrous ring for some reasons is broken, and the core inside the disk is slightly shifted. Then it advances into the intervertebral canal, where it acts on various nerve endings and cells of the spinal cord, resulting in spasms, pain and discomfort.

Intervertebral hernia. Causes

Lack of physical activity, sedentary work and passive rest are the preconditions for the person to have intervertebral hernias. If you believe the experts, then the risk group includes people from 25 to 50 years. As the primary reasons experts name the following: mechanical traumas, impacts in the field of a back, lifting of gravity, sharp turns and so on. The risk group also includes those people who already have a curvature of posture or osteochondrosis. Intervertebral hernias have peculiar symptoms and differ from each other by localization of lesions (lumbar, cervical, thoracic parts). In more detail we will consider a lumbar hernia.

Intervertebral lumbar hernia. Symptomatics

In the early stages of the disease, the likelihood of so-called dull pain in the lumbar region is high, which will increase with sports. Somewhat later, other symptoms are possible, namely:

  • After sudden movements (for example, turns), there is a shooting pain in the lumbar region;
  • Problems with the work of the genitourinary system (pain, diarrhea, incontinence, constipation, etc.);
  • Numbness of fingers or numbness and tingling in the groin area.

Treatment

In medicine, the main methods of treating this disease are conventionally divided into operating and conservative. The latter are also divided into medicamentous and non-medicinal. Conservative methods suggest the use of acupuncture, acupressure, the use of various kinds of folk remedies.

Intervertebral hernia. Operation

This method is used only after a detailed examination by a specialist. In this case, the problem is solved cardinally, that is, by surgical intervention, the hernia is immediately removed. Relief after the operation is observed immediately, but the surgical way to solve the problem has its drawbacks. For example, there is a high probability that during surgery the doctor can touch the spine, therefore, the patient may even remain an invalid. In addition, in medical practice there is evidence of recurrence of the disease. Doctors recommend resorting to surgery only if conservative methods of treatment do not give the expected result.
