IAAF - what is it? History of the creation and development of the organization

This article will tell you about the IAAF International Athletics Association. What it is? How does this abbreviation stand? Under what circumstances was the organization created? All this will be presented below.

Disciplines of athletics, regulated by the IAAF

"Shows and shows!" - shouted in the Roman Empire viewers of the Colosseum. If the "king of sports" is football, then the "queen" is certainly athletics. This spectacular kind of competition, which gathers full stadiums of spectators and millions of television fans, currently consists of 47 kinds (disciplines). The most popular are:

  • Running for 60 meters in enclosed spaces and 100 meters in stadiums;
  • Marathon run (42 km 195 meters);
  • Various jumps in length, triple and in height;
  • Throwing a disc, a spear, a hammer, a shot put;
  • Barrier run (60, 100, 110 meters);
  • Steeplechase - run with obstacles for 3000 meters, overcoming pits with water and barrier bars;
  • Sports walking;
  • Heptathlon in women and decathlon in men.

According to entertainment, athletics can be compared only with the Olympic Games, in the main program of which it is included. The main types of the queen of sport are held at the main stadiums of the Olympiads from the very moment of their holding.

IAAF - what is it?

To regulate coaches and athletes, to conduct championships, establish common standards for all, rules, record achievements, keep records and propaganda, you need a central authority to manage all this. In each country where there are sections on athletics, national federations are formed, which are part of a single federation called the International Athletics Association (IAAF).

After the competition at the Olympics in 1912 in Stockholm (Sweden) decided to hold a meeting in order to approve the universal universal rules of the competition for this sport. As a result, an amateurish international athletics federation was formed. IAAF - what is it?

The development of communications, the increase in the sport of cash injections, the race for records made it all the same to change one of the words without changing the abbreviation IAAF. So, in 2001 we got the name, which is preserved until today - the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). What it is? How did the organization develop and who is at its helm?

History of development of the organization

At the first congress of amateur athletics there were only 17 countries, today there are more than two hundred. In Berlin in 1913 Congress approved the constitution of the organization, which already featured 34 national federations. The first president was Siegfried Edström from Sweden. The same country hosted the headquarters of the federation for the next 30 years. In 1914 in Lyon (France), where the third congress was held, the first international competition rules were announced, which all national organizations had to take to train their athletes in the international arena of world championships and the Olympics.

In 1946, the headquarters moved to England for 40 years. At the next congress in Stuttgart (1993), it was decided to move the central office of the federation from the cold and rainy regions to the warmer and fancier places in Southern Europe (to attract sponsors). In the same year, the headquarters moved to the Principality of Monaco, where the United Nations, Interpol, OSCE, UNESCO, WHO and other international organizations are located. At the moment, the head of the IAAF is the outstanding runner of the century, Sebastian Coe (Great Britain). A slight margin of votes, Sergei Bubka twice did not get to the presidency. The advantage was given to Lord Koe because of more experience in political affairs.

IAAF composition

The IAAF Council consists of 21 members, the treasurer (for whose position was Russian Valentin Balakhnichev), vice-presidents, first or honorary vice-president and the president of the federation himself.

The organization's charter establishes 14 noble goals. The sponsors are attracted, official partnership agreements have been signed with the companies Adidas, Toyota, Seiko, Kenon, TBC, the oil company Sinopek and VTB Bank (the latter terminated the contract due to a scandal with the Russian team).

In honor of the association's centenary on March 8, 2012, the IAAF Hall of Fame was opened at the congress in Istanbul by President Lamine Diak (athlete, politician, father of 15 children). Athletics received a new round of development.

How to become a member of the IAAF?

The criterion of entering the list of the best athletes of all times is the presence of 2 gold medals (Olympic or won at the world championships). Also must pass at least 10 years from the date of completion of a career. The outstanding sportsmen of the USSR, the stars of the world sport are: Valery Brumel, Sergei Bubka, Vladimir Golubnichy, Natalia Lisovskaya, Janis Lusis, Viktor Saneev, Yury Sedykh, Tatyana Kazankina, Vladimir Kuts, Sergey Litvinov, Irina Press.

The organization with all its strength develops and promotes athletics, fair sports, the availability of sport for all categories, regardless of age, race, nationality, religious beliefs. Of course, this is very difficult at the present time.

Athletics development today

Sports today are not harmless physical exercises to maintain the health and activity of a person. This is a thirst for fame, fees, dirty intrigues of large corporations, bookmakers and media magnates. In support of this was the disqualification due to the allegedly doping scandal of the Russian national track and field team.

The team was not allowed to the Olympics-2016 and was suspended from international starts for two years. Now pharmacology has reached a level that can be disqualified for every teenager who drinks energy drinks and fermented yoghurts, plus all grandmothers and colds who bought drugs containing anti-doping drugs banned. Sadly, politics has become superior to honest sports.

Any decision by the IAAF today is not accepted without the approval of organizations that are far from sports. Many famous athletes have therefore completed their careers.
