How to stimulate labor

Not always the birth takes place naturally. Sometimes the level of hormones may be insufficient. In this case, the stimulation of labor is used.

Possible risks

On the stimulation of women agree not very willingly. The reason for this is fear for your baby. Although stimulation in most cases, on the contrary, prevents probable threats to the health of the child and mother. But there are a number of dangers:

- severe pain with the use of drugs (natural stimulation of labor is not of such a disadvantage), the use of epidural anesthesia and medicines to alleviate it and, accordingly, the risks associated with their use;

- prolapse of the umbilical cord;

- risk of placental abruption ;

- if an operation was performed on the uterus or the previous method of delivery had a cesarean section, the stimulation could become quite dangerous;

- unsuccessful stimulation can cause hypoxia of the fetus;

- with prolonged generic process, the probability of rupture of the amniotic bladder increases.

Contraindications

Stimulation is not recommended in the following cases:

- umbilical cord prolapse;

- water has passed: the risk of intrauterine infection is provoked by rupture of the membrane, which contains an amniotic bag surrounding the child;

- Fetal nutrition through the umbilical cord is reduced because of over-stretching of pregnancy;

- the child is diagnosed with a deviation in the work of the heart;

- the fruit is in the lateral (transverse) position;

- high risk of blocking the airways when the child is breathing meconium (the contents of the intestine), which can enter the amniotic fluid ;

- the placenta previa is diagnosed : it partially or completely closes the cervical canal;

- presence of an infectious disease is established;

- the put term of a birth of the child has not approached;

High blood pressure in a pregnant woman;

Uterine bleeding started;

- diabetes.

Stimulation of labor: the main ways

- Amniotomy is an autopsy of a fetal bladder by making a hole in an amniotic bag with a plastic needle. After this, contractions must begin within 24 hours, otherwise the risk of infection increases.

- Stimulation of cervical ripening with a gel (candles) administered by the vaginal method and containing prostaglandins, which are used as analogues of hormones that cut the uterus.

- Strengthening or stimulation of contractions due to intravenous introduction of an artificial substitute oxytocin - a drug "Pitocin", gradually the dose of the drug increases.

Professional stimulation of labor

Without prior diagnosis of the cervix, as well as determining the position of the child, no intervention is possible. For the beginning of childbirth the fetus should take the right location, and the cervical canal become thinner and open. When using drugs often requires the introduction of antispasmodics, analgesics or the use of epidural anesthesia, as stimulation of labor can cause quite strong pain. If everything remains unchanged after a sufficient period of time, a caesarean section is prescribed.
