How much caffeine is contained in decaffeinated coffee?

The use of coffee gives certain health benefits. This, for example, protects the liver, reduces the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. But can you get any effect if you drink decaffeinated coffee?

Perhaps you've heard that even this coffee contains a small percentage of this substance, and it's true. A substance resembling caffeine, even contain cocoa beans. But to get the same effect as with regular coffee, you would have to drink too many cups.

How much caffeine is there where it should not be?

The process of decaffeination usually leads to removal of 94-98 percent of this substance from grains. Although there are no formal rules regarding what product can be called caffeine-free, it is believed that 97% of caffeine should be removed from it.

On average, 450 ml of regular coffee contains 188 milligrams of caffeine, while the same decaffeinated cup contains 9.4 milligrams, according to a 2006 study conducted by scientists from the University of Florida. Researchers say that you need to drink from five to ten such cups to feel the effect.

The content of caffeine in the beverage, in which it should not be, varies depending on what kind of grains have been used, and how the decaffeination process was carried out. For coffee beans, this process is carried out using one of three methods - using water, chemicals or carbon dioxide. The same study by scientists from Florida showed that the caffeine content in a cup of coffee, which is considered to be beskofeenovym, can vary widely, and you will have to look for a drink that does not have it at all.

Results of the research of scientists

For their research, scientists selected samples that had undergone the process of decaffeination, from 10 different manufacturers. The largest amount of caffeine that they found in these samples is 13.9 mg, that is, about thirteen of its amount in ordinary coffee. And only one sample was completely decaffeinated.

The content of caffeine in espresso, the preparation of which differs from the preparation of regular coffee, was also different. On average, the espresso contains 63 milligrams of caffeine. After decoheinization, it remains from 3 to 15.8 milligrams.

Is it worth worrying

But if you can not use caffeine for any reason, and so you choose coffee without it, do not worry: even if you get a coffee in which it does, it is unlikely that this will affect you too much. Professors from the same university in Florida say that, most likely, nothing will happen, and the effect will be invisible.
