Greece, Evia Island: directions, hotels and attractions

Evia is the second largest island in Greece. It lies in the Aegean Sea, a long strip of land extending along the eastern coast near Attica. The length from north to south reaches 180 km, and the width of the island varies from 7 to 50 km. Several straits divide the mainland part of Greece and Evia: Klimis, Orios, Notios-Evvoikos, Vorios-Evvoikos.

Mysterious Strait

What attracts the island of Evia (Greece)? Sights here at every turn. The main one is the Euripa Strait. The fact is that the sea current bifurcates in the north of Evia and joins in the south. Surprisingly, the water flow changes its direction every 6 hours. At this point, you can observe a unique phenomenon - "standing" waves. Then the water begins to circulate from south to north. And so it repeats constantly. It is said that Aristotle himself was discouraged by this process and could in no way solve the riddle of this strait.

Chalcis

This city was an ancient ancient polis, occupying a dominant position on the island. Its history begins in the 13th century BC. During this time Chalcis several times passed from hand to hand, was repeatedly destroyed. Accordingly, there are signs of reign of the Roman Empire, and Byzantium, and Verona. For example, you should definitely visit the historical quarter of Castro, where the buildings of the Venetian and Ottoman periods were preserved. There is the Emir-Zade mosque, the Paraskeva church, the 13th century Catholic basilica, the 19th century synagogue. It is also worthwhile to climb the fortress of Karabagh and enjoy a wonderful view from the height of the Aegean Sea. There is also the grave of the Greek writer Yannis Scaribas.

Eretria

This settlement is located 95 km from Chalkida. Previously, these were the two largest policies that constantly fought among themselves. But Eretria was defeated and disappeared in the first century of our era. It was reborn a little more than 100 years ago. Thanks to excavations, there is a whole archaeological complex. From the monuments of antiquity preserved the ancient acropolis, amphitheater, altar of Dionysus, Roman baths. A mosaic house and an archaeological museum are required, where the most valuable exhibits are the old eretrian vases.

"Stone" forests

The history of the environs of the small town of Kerasya (Greece, Evia Island) is similar to what happened to the ancient Pompeii. There was an eruption of the volcano, from which the surrounding forests were affected. But it is interesting that the ashes settled on the trees and froze in such a way that it seems as if they were petrified. The remains of the found animals, once buried under volcanic magma, are stored in the museum Kerasya.

Karistos

This is one of the most popular resorts in the south of the island. First, here you can visit Burdzi - a medieval Venetian fortress. Secondly, on Mount Ohi (Greece, Evia Island) there are 20 amazing buildings of limestone blocks, which due to their imposing dimensions are called the Dragon Houses. Although in fact they were used, of course, by people, but for what purpose it was necessary to climb so high, it is not known. An unsolved mystery is how the blocks were interconnected without any solution.

Edipsos

Even the ancient Romans knew about the healing properties of local mineral springs. A large bath complex, built in the time of the dictator Sulla, has survived until now and is a local landmark. In it, even Roman emperors warmed their bones.

Now Edipsos has become a well-known balneological resort, where endocrine, neurological, as well as gynecological diseases are treated.
