Grapes care in spring and summer: basic recommendations

Viticulture is an ancient occupation that provides us with fresh and dried grapes, and also provides raw materials for the confectionery and winemaking industries. What care is needed for grapes in spring and summer, depends on many factors. First of all, these are climatic conditions, relief, varieties and purposes of cultivation. In the north, this thermophilic culture grows to 51 degrees north latitude, although some varieties managed to be cultivated, for example, in the Leningrad Region.

What are the characteristics of growing grapes? Planting and care (pruning, watering, treatment against pests) will give good results if the crop grows on soils of light composition (not acidic, not clayey, not marshy) with enough sun. Such places on the planet are in the areas of the Mediterranean, California. On the Russian household plots, they practice planting this plant between buildings into distinctive pockets, where the culture is protected from winds.

The grapes are propagated in a vegetative way, through cuttings up to 0.3 meters in length, which are harvested in the autumn and stored until spring in the sand or in cool rooms. And in the spring they germinate to form buds of rootlets.

Before placing the petioles in the ground (at the end of April or beginning of May), the groundwater level is determined. If the water is less than a meter, then you need to increase this distance to one and a half meters. The plant is planted at a depth of 0.2-0.5 meters (depending on the composition of the soil). Care for the grapes after planting is that the earth is slightly tamped, spilled by heated water (about 30-40 degrees), and the upper part of the plant hills.

Care for grapes in spring and summer should be conducted on an ongoing basis. If the summer is cold, then the seedlings are covered with a film. With a large amount of rain, water from landings must be diverted. On the plant, usually one or two shoots are left, the excess ones are cut off, and the rest are tied with twine to the stakes. In the spring period, care should be taken to ensure that the eyes on the vine are not subjected to excessive alternation of temperatures. Therefore, the vine should be opened after the threat of frost disappears, and the soil is treated with iron or copper vitriol (3-5% solution) after removal of the protection.

Care for grape in spring and summer includes the introduction of a number of nutrients. Grapes favorably apply to the feeding of bird droppings (dilute with water 50x50, insist in a warm place for 14 days, dilute 1: 5) and compost. It is also good to process planting with boric acid (0.1%) to prevent shedding of the ovaries.

Care for grape in spring and summer will give the first results only for the third year after planting the plant. This grapes is considered the best, so breeders tend to form a low vine (up to 1 meter), which in mid-August is plucked at the level of the main stem, and in the middle of October (in dry weather) in the first year is cut. Then follows two years of shaping the stem (pruning, pinching, selecting suitable shoots), on which the first berries appear. If the third year after the correct wintering of the fruits did not appear, then the variety is not suitable for growing in this region.
