In 1791 the gendarmerie was created for the first time, this formation became an innovation in France. In the initial version, it concerned both military ministries and the Ministry of Justice, in addition, it was divided into parts, that is, legions and units, which were called companies. A similar example of the gendarmerie existed in other countries of Europe, for example, in Austria, but before the Russian Empire came to another version.

Initially, the gendarmerie in Russia existed and played the role of the military police. She was subordinate to the heir, but in this format it did not last long. In the early nineteenth century, parts began to appear in the police, which controlled the army from within. In addition, the gendarmerie in the final version was very stubbornly struggling with the uprisings that the revolutionaries arranged, ensuring public order.

One of the most striking examples of the development of state organs is the gendarmerie. This formation always attracted the attention of historians, as each country represented its own variants of this structure, preserving only common features inherent in all similar entities.
