Tambov: general portrait of the city

"Green Tambov has a lot of blue sky ..." - so begins one of the poems of the Soviet poet-songwriter Lev Ivanovich Oshanin, dedicated to this beautiful city. Looking ahead, it can be noted that these two colors contain both the flag and the coat of arms of Tambov. Here, and the truth is, very green. In a relatively small city there are more than a dozen parks!

Located in the city of Tambov, 450 kilometers southeast of Moscow, on the border of the forest and forest-steppe natural zones. Therefore, in its surroundings you can see green forests, and fiery-yellow grain fields. By the way, at one time the city was almost the main breadbasket of the Russian Empire. And today it is one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the country.

Tambov was founded in 1636 as a fortress for protection against nomadic raids. The stronghold was built with the mind, so that nature itself would help to defend itself from enemies. However, their direct protective functions for the entire history of the city of this fortress have never been met.

The people of Tambov are wayward and quite freedom-loving. Tambov muzhiks often rebelled against the oppressors-landlords, and against the Soviet power.

However, not only the history attracts the city of Tambov tourists. There are a lot of architectural monuments: ancient stone churches, manors, civil constructions. One of the most beautiful is the mansion of Aseev. It is rumored that a wealthy manufacturer first built a wooden house for himself, but then burned it with his own hand and erected an even more chic palace, but already made of stone.

All guests of Tambov are surely led to the Quay. This pedestrian two-level street is almost the main symbol of the city. It stretches for two and a half kilometers along the left bank of the Tsna River.

Tambov's coat of arms: description of the symbol

Tambov's coat of arms is one of the oldest in all of Russia. This symbol of the city was developed at the end of the XVIII century.

The coat of arms has the appearance of a traditional rectangular shield, pointed downward, with rounded lower corners. The shield's field is divided into two parts: the upper azure (larger in thickness) and the lower green one. In the center of the coat of arms is a hive of golden color. Over it, three golden bees, suspended in a fan-shaped manner, were suspended in flight.

In its modern form, the Tambov emblem was officially approved in July 2008 (three months later, minor amendments were made to it). The symbol is contained in the State Heraldic Register of the Russian Federation under the number 4233.

Tambov's coat of arms and its history

The first version of the city coat of arms was approved in 1730. In half a century it was reaffirmed by Empress Catherine II. Here is what is said in the description of the Tambov emblem, dated August 1781: "On the azure field of the hive and above it are three golden bees ...".

Initially, Tambov's coat of arms was approved as the battle flag of the Tambov Dragoon Regiment. However, the hive on it was stylized as a fortress, which was laid in 1636 and was a key defensive outpost on the southern borders of Russia. The stronghold was repeatedly besieged by the Nogai and Tatar troops, but none of them could capture it.

It is interesting that in the Soviet era this coat of arms had no official status. However, in 1986, a postage stamp with its image was issued.

Only in 2002 the historical coat of arms of the city was finally restored. Members of the Union of Russian Heraldry participated in its reconstruction. The designer and designer of the new coat of arms was Oksana Afanasyeva, and Konstantin Mochenov advised this process.
