Embolization of uterine arteries in the treatment of uterine myomas

In modern gynecology, the most progressive method of treating uterine fibroids is the embolization of uterine arteries. This A unique procedure allows to avoid a surgical operation, it consists in the introduction of embolus, creating occlusion (occlusion) of blood vessels. With the diagnosis of uterine fibroids for many years, women were prescribed resection of the formation, up to the complete removal of the uterus, but today embolization of the uterine arteries allows to cut off the blood flow supplying the fibromatous nodes with blood and, thereby, block the progress of the tumor. As a result of the procedure, the myoma gradually decreases in size.

Sequence of the procedure

The treatment process consists of puncture of the thigh artery, subsequent catheterization of the uterine vessels and the introduction of an embolization drug through the catheter. Particles of this drug are stuck in vessels of a certain diameter and overlap them. The procedure is performed before the full blockage of all vessels providing nutrition to the fibroids. To completely block the tumor, embolization of uterine arteries is performed from two sides. In order to confirm the absence of blood supply to the nodes at the end of the procedure, a control arteriogram is made. Skin punctures are treated with antiseptic, for 12 hours they are put on a squeezing sterile bandage.

Indications and contraindications for the procedure

Embolization of uterine arteries is prescribed in the following cases:

1. Definitions of growing or symptomatic uterine fibroids. The procedure is recommended:

  • With uterine size corresponding to the gestation period from 7 to 20 weeks, in the absence of pathology of the cervix, ovaries and endometrium. With smaller uterine size, embolization is not desirable because in this case the success of its implementation is minimal;
  • With the interest of patients in further pregnancy, with the established role of fibroids in the pathogenesis of infertility or a high probability of miscarriage;
  • In preparation for surgical removal of the uterus (myomectomy) or hysteroresectoscopy;

2. With severe uterine bleeding of different etiologies, in cases when other methods of treatment involve a clear threat to the life of the patient.

Contraindication to embolization may be the presence of an infectious process and a strong allergy to the drugs used, leading to anaphylactic shock or edema Quincke.

Advantages

Embolization of the uterine arteries is a non-surgical, organ-preserving treatment that allows women to maintain their reproductive function after it is performed. It is produced without the use of general anesthesia and requires only an 8-hour bed rest. Embolization does not leave scars, tissue damage during its implementation is minimal - it is 2 punctures for the introduction of a catheter. Many patients on the same day go home, and a full recovery occurs within 2 weeks. In case of an increase in the body's overall temperature, anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed, and possible pain sensations are suppressed with the help of anesthetics.

Reviews

Women are very happy with the result, which leads to embolization of uterine arteries. Reviews of numerous patients are reduced to the fact that the entire operation is painless and lasts no more than 10 minutes. With preserved functions of the uterus, the tumor no longer progresses and gradually decreases in size. And the most important thing is that women after the procedure are still capable of giving birth to children.

In a modern clinic, uterine arteries embolization costs are quite high, but the result is definitely worth it. This amount includes the work of doctors, the price of the embolizing drug and the tools used, as well as stay in the hospital.
