Drive shaft seal to "Ford Focus 2". Purpose and method of replacement

There is a small, but very important detail in the crankcase of the gearbox - the stuffing box. If this small rubber ring gets spoiled, a fatal crash of the box may occur. What is the seal intended for? How do you know if it's worn out? Can I replace it myself? About everything in order.

What is the stuffing box for?

An epiploon is applied in all connections of the car where tight sealing of moving elements is necessary for prevention of leakage of lubricating liquids. Simply put, in the gearbox, the drive shaft seal on the Ford Focus 2 seals the joint between the crankcase and the drive itself. If it is not there - out of the box will drain all the oil, and it will jam.

In addition to retaining grease, the stuffing box prevents sand, mud and water from getting into the anchorage, which is also very important. Dirt mixed with the transmission fluid circulating through the system can lead to overheating of the box.

Symptoms of gland wear

The main and almost unique symptom of wear of the stuffing box is the oil spills around it. If any, just in case, you need to check with your hand, whether it is oil? Rarely, but it happens that these are drops of water (for example, after washing the machine or driving in puddles).

Having made sure that it is really oil, we also check the breather. It is designed to vent the gearbox and equalize the pressure inside it. The breather is located on the crankcase cover. When this element becomes clogged, the air circulation is disrupted in the box, resulting in increased pressure, which pushes oil through all kinds of connections.

When the conclusion becomes unambiguous, that the stuffing box of the drive "Ford Focus 2" is worn out, it's time to start replacing it.

Set of tools

As it turned out, the right-hand drive shaft seal is structurally different from the left-hand drive shaft seal "Ford Focus 2". Different directions of labels inside (on the right stuffing box it points to the left, and on the left - to the right). The last digit of marking the right stuffing box is 4, and the left one is 5. The right stuffing box is black, and the left one is brown. If they are accidentally reversed, there will be no sealed joint, and oil will leak out.

To replace it you will need:

  • Key on 13;
  • Allen key for 30;
  • The device for pressing in (a metal cylinder);
  • a hammer;
  • Mounting;
  • A container for waste oil;
  • Screwdriver;
  • A new epiploon and трансмиссионная a liquid (if oil from a box needs to be changed).

Replacement

The car is driven to the overpass or pit. In general, the replacement of drive shaft seals on the "Ford Focus 2" is optimally carried out on the lift, because it is easier to remove the wheels from the car. But since self-repair, most likely, will be carried out in garage conditions, then the machine after removing the wheels is installed on the support. Then begin the disassembly:

  1. Drain the transmission fluid. Visually assess the need for its replacement.
  2. We unscrew the ball from the pivot.
  3. We take the drive from the hub.
  4. With the help of the mount, take the sail out of the box.
  5. We take the old stuffing box, using any metal hook.
  6. Place the fastening with a clean rag from the residual oil.
  7. When installing a new one, we use a little lubricant.
  8. Here we use the device for pressing. Gently hit them on the epiploon until fully planted.

Build process:

  1. To insert the actuator, the rotary knuckle must be pressed outward.
  2. We put the outboard bearing against the stop.
  3. We fasten its nuts.
  4. Finger insert into the ball joint.
  5. We twist the nut. At the same time, we slightly press the ball so that the finger does not scroll.

Fill the oil in the box:

  1. Remove the lid and unscrew the plug of the neck.
  2. We fill the transmission fluid with a large syringe.
  3. Check the oil level.
  4. We tighten the cork, put the lid in place.

The process of replacing the seal of the drive "Ford Focus 2" is quite simple. The spare part itself is inexpensive and is always on sale.
