Dimensions of smartphone screens: which one is better to choose and with what parameters?

The sizes of screens of modern smartphones are constantly increasing. As a result, when choosing a new mobile device, a potential new owner has a lot of questions about this. It is on them and answers will be given in this material.

Screen size

The size of the screens in the entry level devices start from the mark of 3.2 inches. Although rare, but you can still meet gadgets with this diagonal. Only here it is not quite convenient to work on it: a small display and on it text in small print is difficult to disassemble. Similar problems occur when watching a video, which will also be illegible. An increase in the diagonal of the display to 3.5 does not solve the problem. Although this diagonal is personally recommended by Steve Jobs, but it is no longer relevant. It is inconvenient to work on a device with a similar diagonal. Slightly better from the position of ergonomics devices, in which the touch panel has a diagonal of 4 inches. But for comfortable work on the smartphone is better, if its diagonal will be in the range from 4.3 to 5 inches. It is at this size that it is not so difficult to manage with one hand. However, the text and video on it will be very legible. Yes, and the gameplay on such a smart phone will only bring pleasure (of course, only if there is adequate hardware). But the devices with a diagonal display greater than 5 inches can be considered not entirely convenient. At such sizes, it is problematic to control only one hand. Yes, and in his pocket it will be difficult to place and will have to buy a separate bag for transporting the smartphone. But the text and video on such devices, of course, will be many times better.

Resolution

Of course, the size of the screens in modern touch smartphones play an important role. They combine both input and output functions simultaneously. But the diagonal of the sensory part alone is only part of the problem. When choosing a new device, you need to take into account also the resolution of the display, that is, the number of points (the second name of the pixels) in width and length. For example, the diagonal of the device is 5 inches, and its resolution is 800x480. In this case, the image will be grainy (individual pixels can be disassembled with the naked eye) and on the smartphone it will not be very convenient to work. Therefore, when choosing a new smartphone, you need to take this parameter into account. For devices with a diagonal of 4.3 to 4.7 inches, the optimal resolution is 1280x720 (it is also sometimes abbreviated as 720p). If this value is greater, then it's okay - the picture from this will only get better. But for gadgets with a touchpad diagonal from 4.8 to 5 inches is better suited 1920x1080 (the second designation is 1080p).

Technology

The size of the phone's screen and its resolution are important factors that ensure comfortable operation on the device, but an important component of this system is the display matrix. More precisely, the technology by which it is made. To date, there are only three:

  • The first of them is "TFT". It is obsolete today and is only used on entry-level devices. Its main drawback is image distortion at viewing angles that are close to 180 degrees.
  • The second type of matrix is "Super AMOLED". It lacks the main drawback of the previous one, but you can meet such a technical solution mostly only on Samsung devices.
  • The most widely used technology today is IPS. The main difference from Super AMOLED is improved color rendering. That's why most manufacturers of mobile devices paid attention to it.

As a result, the most optimal choice for today are precisely those devices, based on the screens of which the technology "IPS" lies: they and the viewing angles are excellent, and the color rendition is an order of magnitude better.

Another important nuance

The last important parameter, which allows you to get the maximum image quality on the sensor surface of the device is OGS technology. Its essence lies in the fact that there is no air gap between the surface of the screen matrix and the upper sensor glass. That is, they are a single whole. Due to this, the viewing angles considerably increase (they practically reach 180 degrees) and the picture on the display of the mobile phone is not distorted. This technology is implemented on premium devices and partly on the most advanced gadgets of the average price range.

Recommendations

Now let's sum up and give an answer to the question about what screen size should be in the phone and with what parameters. The diagonal should be between 4.3 and 5.0 inches. In this case for gadgets with diagonals of 4.3 -4.7 inches will be optimal resolution of 1280x720, and for devices 4.8-5.0 this parameter should be equal to 1920x1080. Also, the matrix underlying the display should be implemented using the "IPS" technology and OGS technology should be implemented in the device. It is these sizes of screens with such parameters that will provide the most comfortable level of work on the smartphone.
