Desna (river) - the largest tributary of the Dnieper

The longest tributary of the Dnieper, Ukraine's largest waterway, is Desna. The river originates in Russia, in the Smolensk region, and flows into the Dnieper slightly above Kiev. The total length of the Desna is 1130 km.

Location

The Desna River, the map of which will be shown below, flows in only four regions. Two of them are Russian: these are the Bryansk and Smolensk regions. On the territory of Ukraine Desna flows in the Kiev region and to the greatest extent in Chernigov.

General characteristics

The Desna is a river, into which only 31 tributaries flow, of which eighteen are right and thirteen are left. The total area of the water basin is 90 thousand square meters. Depth of the bottom is on average 2 to 4 meters, but in some places this value can increase to 17. At the mouth of the river, the width of the water reaches 450 meters. Before the Sejm, the largest tributary, Desna - the river is not very wide, and the Seim extends it up to 300 meters, although earlier values come across much smaller. For example, in Novgorod-Seversky its width on city beaches can be only 20-30 meters, although outside the city this value increases by two or even three or four times. The difference in width is often due to the fact that the water artery is very flowery, flows through different types of terrain and has a huge number of turns, so it is sometimes not clear whether the big river is in front of us or small.

The same factor is associated with the fact that the flow velocity is different. People who love rest on the Desna River, choose places where it is more or less calm, so that you can swim and relax properly without incident, which, incidentally, are quite common. The speed of the current is such that an inefficient swimmer can easily take out to a depth or be overwhelmed by a wave. The bottom of the Desna is uneven: then you stand on the belt in the middle of the river, then suddenly under the very shore you can not get the bottom. Statistics of tragic cases, unfortunately, are not so small, but this, in principle, is no longer connected with the course of the river, but with the fact that people are careless and do not know the basic rules of behavior on the water. Many people run headlong to dive without exploring the bottom.

From shipping to cleaning problems

It was also noted that the river regularly navigates from Novgorod-Seversky to the mouth and cruises the dry cargo ship upstream. But the situation is that every year the Desna (the river) becomes smaller. More and more often on water open spaces it is possible to observe only motor boats or tourist boats. The problem is related to the fact that, unfortunately, no one is dealing with the cleaning of rivers. All sand, silt, garbage, waste are generously discharged by ordinary citizens and by whole enterprises. To the river was full, clean, full, it is necessary to clean it, but you need to spend money on it. And the state, as usual, does not provide for these expenditures of budgetary funds.

Where do the waters come from in the Desna

The water supply of the river is mostly melted snow. In spring, Desna usually spills heavily, and this is observed for a fairly long time. Its waters are flooded with meadows, which constitute the lion's share of the territories in its valley. The more snow falls in winter, the cooler the spring, the larger and farther it fills the very meadows of the Desna (the river). The photo of the spill near the monastery in Novgorod-Seversky perfectly describes what landscape can be expected in the spring. In addition, it flows through forest belts, and in its valley there are many bays and lakes. To call Desna a monotonous and uninteresting language for no one will turn the tongue.

What remarkable can you see by the river?

There are many ancient cities of Ukraine on the Desna River. For example, Novgorod-Seversky, already mentioned above, is a city of Drevlyans, founded in 989. It is located in the Chernigov region. The city is of great historical value: there were many events related to Kievan Rus, and in earlier times. There are many interesting monuments of culture and history. But, unfortunately, over the years, Novgorod-Seversky is becoming less popular. The economy and industry in the city do not develop, even a powerful tourist base is simply idle without need, and young people prefer to go to cities where there are at least some prospects.

Desna in the news

Most recently, the news slipped through that the Desna (the river, which was previously quite clean, right up to the point where it was boiled from its water) was subjected to unauthorized discharge of production wastes, that is, there are also authorized discharges. Nevertheless, the results of the studies did not show a deterioration in water quality. And it is true, in order to see this result, it is enough simply to enter the river clean and get dirty. No research will show anything. Show only the girl's hair, which after staying in the Gneiss waters can be laid without a gel as you wish. This, of course, is exaggeration, but the fact remains that there is pollution, and it is necessary to understand this, and not to conduct examinations that show that the water is still relatively clean.

What else can the Desna River attract? Fishing - interesting for most men occupation - here, too, is quite possible. So what can you catch in these waters?

Fish, which is found in the Desna

Fishermen point to the possibility of catching pike in the waters of the river, and also successfully caught pike perch, perch, Czechia, bream, roach. Permanent natives are burbot, sazan, podost, barbel, rudd. But such specimens are not found to fishermen as often as they would like. Places, as they say, you need to know.
