Decorative paint for walls: types and methods of application

Painting is considered a simple, easy and popular way of wall finishing, which is available to almost everyone. The assortment of modern paint and varnish materials allows to realize unusual and interesting ideas in the design.

Types of decorative wall paint

There are two main groups of paints.

• For outdoor works. They can also be used indoors if necessary.
• For interior finishing works.

In addition, depending on the film-forming substance, the paints are divided into:

• Oil;
• Enamel;
• Glutinous;
• Water emulsion.

Enamel and oil paints are also called alkyd paints.

Alkyd Paints

Such paints are also used for exterior and interior finishing works. They are water- and light-resistant, however, are not sufficiently resistant to alkali and fire hazard. Are intended for painting of plastered, wooden and metal surfaces. They are applied with a paint sprayer, roller or brush. Dilute turpentine and linseed oil paints, special solvents and white spirit - enamel. Alkyd paint decorative for walls is applied in a well-ventilated area. Has a long drying time.

Adhesive paints

Based on aqueous solutions of cellulose ethers, polyvinyl alcohol, casein, starch, etc. On application and properties, decorative adhesive for walls is close to emulsion paint. An important plus of similar paints is their porosity: through them the moisture quickly evaporates, the coatings from them do not interfere with the air exchange.

Water emulsion and emulsion paints

It is a paint in which the binding matrix and pigments are dispersed in an aqueous medium, forming a stable suspension. After applying it on the surface, the water begins to evaporate and the polymer film cures. Therefore, such a decorative paint for walls is not afraid of the influence of water. Water-based paints are non-toxic and fireproof. They do not exfoliate and maintain a healthy microclimate in the house.

Emulsion paints are used for painting plastered, primed, concrete, wooden and metal surfaces, however, they are not suitable for varnished and glued surfaces. They perfectly fit most of the coatings, easily washed off tools and hands. Apply them with a spray gun, roller and brush.

Water-based paints are divided into:

• Polyvinyl acetate;
• Latex;
• Silicone;
• Acrylic;
• Silicate;
• Mineral.

Polyvinyl acetate paints

They refer to the cheapest paints, but they have little resistance to wet cleaning and abrasion. They are used mainly for dry surfaces. Also a minus is a meager selection of colors for tinting, performed only by hand.

Acrylic paints

These are the most popular paints made on the basis of acrylic resins. They have high elasticity and strength. They are not afraid of wet cleaning, they have a good enough resistance to abrasion. However, acrylic paint decorative for walls should not be used in places where it can get water. For the tinting of acrylic paints there are many colors, while the tinting is done manually and using computerized tinting systems.

Latex inks

They have an increased resistance to wet abrasion, they make it possible to obtain a silky matte surface and cover the base with a thin layer. These are the most expensive water-based paints.

Silicate paints

This is an aqueous solution of liquid glass, mixing with colored pigments. With many surfaces, these dyes coalesce, forming strong physico-chemical bonds that are resistant to different atmospheric phenomena. Surfaces coated with silicate paints have high vapor and air permeability. They serve up to 20 years. Designed for finishing interior and exterior walls and protecting structures from wood from fire.

Silicone paints

Their basis is an aqueous dispersion of silicone resins. They are vapor-permeable, have high elasticity, are hygienic.

How to apply decorative paint on walls

Walls for different colors are prepared in different ways. They are cleaned of dirt and debris of old coatings. The degree of adhesion of the walls affects the need for abrasive or primer application. The necessary tools and features of the application depend on a certain composition.

Decorative effects

With the help of decorative paints you can create a variety of decorative effects.

• Mosaic (multicolor) surface. Composed of several colors, one of which is the main one, the others - plastic additives. At the same time, different colors do not mix, creating a multicolor base.

• Silk surfaces. Decorative paint for walls with the effect of silk today has become very popular. Thanks to the addition of polymeric pearlescent "sawdust", you can create a silk effect on the wall. The composition of this ink includes water, acrylic resin (as a binding component) and a pigment.
