Coughing up with blood: possible causes

A person, as a rule, starts to panic when he has a cough with blood. The causes here can be very different, including diseases of the pulmonary system. The main thing is to sort out everything by contacting the doctor in a timely manner.

Of course, hemoptysis (coughing up of saliva or sputum with a trace of blood) is a cause for concern. Remember that the very color of the blood can help diagnose the cause. So, a cough with blood of bright red color or sputum with foam indicates respiratory diseases, and a dark color indicates a malfunction in the gastrointestinal tract.

So, a cough with blood can testify to a variety of lung diseases, about internal bleeding. Sometimes, when the blood in the sputum when coughing is not pronounced, only some veins are observed, it is possible that this is caused by the rupture of a small blood vessel in the lung region. This condition is not dangerous to health. However, another cause of this may be an inflammatory process in the lungs (pneumonia, tuberculosis, swelling), which causes much more serious concern.

One of the main criteria by which you can determine how dangerous coughing with blood in your case is its systematic and analysis of the general condition. If you cough occasionally, and you feel fine, there is no reason to worry. If the blood appears constantly, a visit to the doctor is inevitable.

Remember that if you are sick with chronic bronchitis, this can hardly be the reason for the presence of blood in the sputum. As a rule, this type of bronchitis does not have such a symptomatology. But a doctor's consultation is necessary, any reasons for this condition are possible.

If the blood appears in the saliva, this is a cause for serious concern, because it indicates the presence of serious diseases (pneumonia, acute bronchitis, lung cancer).

In order for the rule to determine the factors that caused the appearance of a cough with blood, you need to make sure where the blood comes from: the intestine, stomach or lungs. One should be able to distinguish between vomiting and blood from coughing:

  1. Immediately before the cough, the patient feels some tingling in the throat, while the blood is foaming and has a bright red color.
  2. If you are concerned about vomiting with blood, then it should have been preceded by nausea and unpleasant sensations in the abdomen. The blood itself is similar to the thick paint in its appearance.

There are some main factors that cause blood in the sputum:

  • Presence of inflammatory processes in the lungs (bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, lung abscess);
  • Tumors of various degrees and locations;
  • Other diseases of the pulmonary system.

Concerning the treatment of cough with blood, it should be noted that it depends entirely on the cause of the onset. If it appeared as a result of the development of lung cancer, the main treatment is chemotherapy, radiation therapy or surgical intervention. If the use of these methods is successful, a cough with blood disappears.

When the root cause of the disease is tuberculosis, there is a need for antituberculous therapy (use of antituberculosis drugs and immunomodulators). Immunomodulators are drugs that strengthen the immune system and effect humoral regulation.

In the presence of acute bronchitis treatment occurs with the use of antibiotics. When a doctor diagnosed an abscess of the lung , surgical intervention is usually required.

In any case, whatever the cause of the blood in the sputum, it is necessary to consult a doctor for their clarification and the appointment of an adequate treatment. Take care of your health and never be afraid to seek help from specialists!
