Cellular polycarbonate: properties and uses

Polycarbonate is an extensive group of thermoplastics that have a single formula and a wide range of applications. Its name was derived from carbonic acid derivatives - carbonates. Thanks to the development of modern technologies, polycarbonate properties are much better than its counterparts, which are used in construction.

Polycarbonate, whose properties are characterized by high strength and toughness, is used to construct various structures - both large industrial facilities and private small structures. In this case, the composition of polycarbonate sheets can be filled with glass fibers to improve the mechanical properties.

In everyday life polycarbonate is used in the manufacture of canopies, CDs, canopies, fences, arbors, greenhouses, roofs, lenses, etc. Polycarbonate sheets are sold in unlimited quantities and a wide range.

Polycarbonate sheet manufacturers produce two types:

  1. Cellular polycarbonate. The properties of the material are structural strength, low weight, high quality of thermal insulation and plasticity. It is a hollow multi-layer panel, which are connected by vertical stiffeners.
  2. Monolithic polycarbonate. These are solid panels whose properties are highly resistant to all industrial sheet-type plastics and a large operating temperature limit.

Cellular polycarbonate is produced by melting polymer beads. The resulting mixture is extruded through a certain shape, which determines the construction and structure of the sheet. A variety of colors of polycarbonate significantly expands the scope of this building material. It is possible to apply on its surface a specific composition that will not retain the emerging condensate.

Properties of polycarbonate:

  • Resistance to aggressive chemicals;
  • Plasticity and impact strength;
  • Optical transparency of a high degree;
  • Excellent sound insulation;
  • Resistant to aggressive weather conditions and sunlight;
  • Incombustibility;
  • High wear resistance;
  • a light weight.

It should be noted separately cellular polycarbonate, whose properties indicate a high fire safety. When the object is ignited from polycarbonate, the cells in its panels contribute to the removal of combustion products and smoke. In this case, the material itself is not a distributor of fire and does not form falling hot drops. During combustion, it swells, thin and light threads appear, which instantly cool in the air.

Polycarbonate. Properties and applications

In view of the lightness, flexibility, color diversity, strength, ease of installation, durability of products and their excellent optical properties, polycarbonate is used in the following areas:

  • Construction - glazing of structures and structures of agricultural and industrial importance;
  • Decorative design - interior partitions, canopies, doors, shop windows;
  • Outdoor advertising - signs, bulky advertising carriers, boards, stands, boxes, stands.
