Cassandra Cain - character of DC Comics

In the DC Comics universe, new characters appear infrequently. This is done in order not to confuse the readers once again, and because it is not easy to come up with a really interesting superhero.

The new Batgerl Cassandra Kane, who appeared on the comic book pages in 1999, was the most successful innovation of the DC over the past two decades. A complex biography of the girl made her a favorite of many readers around the world.

The DC Comics universe

The comic book publisher DC Entertainment is one of the two most famous companies in the world specializing in creating graphic novels. It is to him that humanity should be thankful for the appearance of Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern and John Constantine.

All comic book characters of this publisher are linked to each other and belong to a single DC universe.

Around each superhero there is always a small number of his companions and assistants. Superman has his cousin Supergerl, Lois Lane, Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman and other members of the Justice League. The equally famous Dark Knight Gotham - Commissioner James Gordon, Catwoman, Robin and Batgirl. If Gordon and Selina Kyle are specific people, then under the masks of Robin and Batgerl at different times there were completely different people with their complex destinies.

A new superheroin DC named Cassandra Cain

This girl is the fourth Batgirl in the history of Gotham.

For the first time she appeared on the pages of the 567th edition of the comics about Batman in July 1999.

The "parents" of Miss Kane are a young American illustrator, Damon Scott, writer Kelly Puckett and editor Jordan B. Gorfinkel.

It is noteworthy that she became the first Batgerl for whom a solo comic series was created.

The origin of the heroine and her childhood

Parents of the future Batgerl, strangely enough, were pretty well-known criminals: a hired killer from China named Lady Shiva and another no less famous killer David Kane.

Even before the birth of the girl, her father planned to grow from her ideal defender for Ra's al-Gul. Under the contract with Lady Shiva, as soon as Cassandra was born, David took her to him and started raising. Since the father emphasized the development of the combat skills of his child and did not engage in teaching the daughter how to speak, the baby's brain underwent serious changes, and later Dyslexia developed in Cassandra.

Despite the fact that the young Miss Kane was not able to speak, read and write, her brain compensated for this by the ability to recognize the body language of other people, as well as to anticipate their actions.

When Cassandra turned five years old, David Kane began taking her with him to "work", so that his daughter began to relate to the murders of others as a normal phenomenon.

Three years later he sent the girl to kill Fayzul. As an obedient daughter, Cassandra Kane fulfilled her father's assignment, but, realizing what a murder really was, she felt disgusted and fled from the pope and his grandiose plans.

Cassandra in the Bat family

The next nine years of independent life Cassandra spent traveling the world. Once in Gotham, she became friends with Barbara Gordon, who was hiding under the hacker's pseudonym Orakul. After the girl saved his stepfather Barbara - James Gordon - from his father, Batman paid attention to her and suggested becoming a new Batgerl.

Cassandra manages to get close to the Oracle and the Dark Knight, and later Bruce Wayne became her official adoptive father.

Over time, Cassandra Kane so successfully fought the crime of Gotham, that her stepfather allows her to work on her own if she does not fight too dangerous rascals, like the Joker.

Meanwhile, David Kane decides to return his child to the "right" road. To quarrel the girl with Batman, he sends the Dark Knight a record of the first murder of Cassandra. However, this does not work, but, on the contrary, only unites the adoptive father and daughter.

Later, this comic book hero is exposed to the influence of a powerful telepath who restores the normal work of her brain, and she learns to speak, but loses the ability to anticipate people's actions and "read" them. Batman tried to help his ward to acquire new skills, but she was too obsessed with what she had lost. Later, the girl encountered her biological mother, and she offered to teach her if at the end of Cassandra she would fight her.

Time passed, and, having learned to fight well, Miss Kane-Wayne went to the duel with her mother. However, the destructive feeling of guilt that had not left her since Fayzul's murder caused her to suicidal thoughts. Therefore, she succumbed to Lady Shiva, allowing herself to be killed. Having understood the mood of her daughter, her mother resurrected her and forced her to fight with her in full force. As a result, Cassandra won.

Later, Batgerl was able to save from Bruce Wayne's prison, proving that the real killer was her own father, David.

Cassandra in the League of Assassins

By sending her biological parent to prison and coping with suicidal tendencies, Cassandra Kane was able to focus on combating crime.

After joining the Justice League, she left Gotham for a long time and participated in several important missions.

Returning home, the girl learned that the whole of the Bat family had gone on vacation, and with crime in Gotham Harvey Dent was fighting , once again overcoming his schizophrenia. Then Cassandra alone patrols the streets of the city, until one day a criminal named Dieffstock introduces her a drug that makes the girl angry.

Under the influence of medicine, Cassandra leaves the Bat family and joins the League of Assassins. Working for them, she commits a lot of crimes and even tries to destroy the Superhero. However, Robin does not abandon attempts to save the girl and, finding an antidote, introduces him to his girlfriend.

Black Bat

Having recovered himself and returning to the Beth-family, Cassandra suffers from the pangs of conscience for her deed and dreams of finding her father and Dafstroke, who are partly guilty of everything she did. Having found David Kane, the girl defeated him in an honest duel, but did not kill.

In the subsequent editions of the comics, the girl was the leader of the Outsiders, and also participated in the organization of the Network.

During Batman's alleged death, Cassandra was very sad and therefore gave her suit to Batherl's ex-girlfriend Robin - Stephanie Brown, who was fighting crime under the pseudonym Spoiler. Miss Kane-Wayne herself went to Hong Kong, where she continued to fight the scoundrels in the usual black attire. Later, she was found by Robin and gave her an upgraded suit, Batgerl.

Initially, the girl did not express a desire to use it, but when she became a representative of the Batman Corporation in Hong Kong, she nevertheless began to wear it, taking on the heroic name Black Bat.

Fighting under a new pseudonym, was able to neutralize many dangerous criminals Cassandra Kane. DC comics in recent years describe the temporary return of the heroine to Gotham, where she fights the villain Architect.

Interesting facts

  • Miss Kane-Wayne became a victim of confusion, like many fictional protagonists. "Cannon of Death" - Cassandra Kane is sometimes indicated by the author of this series of books by mistake. This oversight is due to the fact that the pseudonym of the epic writer is Cassandra Clare.

Despite this, Miss Kane-Wayne continues to acquire more admirers around the world, and who knows, maybe in the future the management of DC Entertainment will change its mind on her account.
