ZIL-554-MMZ and its characteristics

In many fields of activity, dump trucks are used. ZIL-554-MMZ takes one of the leading positions among them. It is produced on the basis of the ZIL-130B2 chassis.

The history of the model

The production of ZIL vehicles at OAO Mytishchi Machine-Building Plant began in 1953. One of the most popular models was ZIL-554, which went off the assembly line in 1957. This model was developed specifically for agriculture. It differed from its predecessors in the standard size of the frame and the possibility of unloading goods from three sides.

During the years of production, a large number of modifications were introduced to the market, which, in the course of time, were supplemented and improved.

In 1975 ZIL-554-MMZ received the state award "Quality Mark".

Features

A distinctive feature of the ZIL-130 MMZ-554 was the adaptability to roads with poor coverage. In many ways thanks to this car is still popular. In addition, it is a simple, reliable and unpretentious dump truck.

Nevertheless, many consider it a long time outdated model. This is due to the small carrying capacity and high fuel consumption. With a carrying capacity of four tons, the average fuel consumption is thirty liters. When connected to a trailer, the consumption increases by another five liters.

The first models of the ZIL-MMZ-554 were produced with gasoline engines. But during a difficult economic situation, when the decrease in the production of low-octane grades led to a rise in price of gasoline, they declined from carburettors. To replace them came diesel engines D-245. The new modification proved to be more economical.

Characteristics of ZIL-MMZ-554

The basic models of the dump truck originally had two versions of the gasoline engine:

• With eight cylinders and liquid cooling.

• With six cylinders and a capacity of 110 horsepower.

In both cases, the fuel used was A-72 gasoline, and later A-76. The volume of the fuel tank is 175 liters.

Diesel engines D-245, which were installed in later models, had a capacity of up to 150 horsepower. This was enough to disperse without a trailer to ninety kilometers per hour. The fuel consumption at full load and speed up to forty kilometers per hour is twenty-eight liters. When lifting a loaded car, the consumption increases to fifty liters.

The manual transmission has five gears.

To stop when driving on a flat road without slopes at a speed of thirty kilometers per hour, you need eleven meters. The ZIL braking system is pneumatic. Brakes of a drum type.

The body is all-metal, with springs. Cabin capacity of three people. The windshield on ZIL-554-MMZ is panoramic, slightly curved. This improves the view.

ZIL-554-MMZ is considered an agricultural dump truck. It is used for transportation of grain, fertilizers and other types of products. Increase the number of transported goods will help the sideboards that come in the package. To protect the load, a tarpaulin canopy is used.
