Wood stains. Wood stain - colors. Water stain for wood

Tree barking is an effective way of finishing, allowing to emphasize its beauty and to give the material the desired shade. Wood stains (stamens), unlike paints, do not form an opaque layer on the surface of the wood, but penetrate inside it (as if fused). In this way, plain furniture from cheap wood species can be given a noble appearance.

What should I look for when choosing a key?

The chosen stain for wood (colors - oak, ash, walnut, etc.) from different companies may not look the same. Therefore, you should trust the visual impression, and not the inscription on the package.

It should be borne in mind that manufacturers usually provide color samples on low-cost wood (for example, pine) boards, and in the finished product of another material, the treated surface will look completely different. This is due to the fact that different tree species have different density and structure. They also differ in the chemical composition of the elements. When applying the same stain, the mahogany will look more red, the maple will hardly change its color (this is a very dense material), and poplar and oak will darken. In this case, the porous poplar will very quickly change the color (it absorbs a lot of stain), and on the oak tree a clear picture of the tree appears, because it has a clearly expressed structure.

Apart from the wood species, the result will depend on the quality of the thing. Therefore, before processing it is necessary to test the stain on the invisible sections of all materials used.

The whole pieces of wood processed by stain will look darker than plywood from the same kind of wood. This should be taken into account when manufacturing combined furniture. Often, this problem can be dealt with by applying additional layers of dye in certain places.

What are the types of bait?

Wood stains, like paints, are divided according to the purpose into two types: for indoor and outdoor use. The latter include a pigment that does not fade under the influence of UV irradiation.

On sale there are pasty (gels), powdered stains and stains in the form of ready-made solutions.

By their composition, they can be: water, acrylic, alcohol, oil, chemical, wax.

Water stain for wood: advantages and disadvantages

In rooms, there is often a need to use a dye without a pungent odor. In such cases, water-based stains are used. In addition, these formulations are advisable to use when painting products with which contact of food or children is possible.

Advantages of water stains:

- absence of smell;
- harmlessness to human health when working with them;
- Savings (no need to purchase a solvent).

Disadvantages:

- relatively low intensity of staining;
- long drying time (about 12-14 hours);
- lifting of the pile on the wood after applying the stain. After the dye has dried, grinding of the surface is necessary.

Acrylic stains: price differences

A modern version of water stains is acrylic stains. They are emulsions made from acrylic resin. These compounds have a wider color palette (compared to conventional water stains) and are more resistant to fading. The only drawback that an acrylic stain for a tree possesses is the price. If the water-based stain in a plastic bottle of 500 ml can be bought at a price of 12 rubles (on average - about 50 rubles), then the minimum cost of an acrylic analogue is 310 rubles. A water stain in a barrel of 200 liters costs 4800 rubles, and a non-water stain ("Evrovedra" with a volume of 20 liters) - 1710 rubles.

Nuances of the application of stain

1. Material from coniferous species of wood, for example spruce or pine, must be previously demolished, because the resinous layers poorly absorb the dye and almost do not change its color.

2. Before applying water stain, it is recommended to moisten the surface, since wet wood absorbs the dye better.

3. Wood stains differently penetrate deep into the material along and across the fibers. Longitudinal application of the dye is more often used.

4. For wood toning, spray guns, brushes, rollers, fabric or foam rubber swabs are used.

5. The dye has the property of rapidly settling. Therefore, when painting large areas, it is necessary to have as much solution in a separate container as there is enough for the entire surface, while during the work the composition must often be stirred.

6. If a powdered stain is used, it must be dissolved in soft water, preferably distilled (according to the instructions on the package). Rigid water can be softened by boiling or adding 1 teaspoon of soda to 1-2 liters of liquid.

7. To obtain a darker color, a solution with a higher concentration is used.

8. If the dye composition is cloudy, it should be filtered using filter paper, cotton wool or dense fabric.

9. Before drilling, the surface to be painted should be thoroughly ground and cleaned: remove oil stains with gasoline or other solvent, traces of carpentry glue with hot water, dust with a brush or a rag.

10. Avoid streams, because then they are not easy to get rid of. The dried layer of wood stain is very stable, and it can be completely removed from the wood, only by peeling the surface with a sandpaper.

11. When processing vertical planes, the dye composition should be applied from the bottom to the top.

12. If the stain is preheated before use, it will penetrate deeper into the wood.

13. To achieve the desired result, the stain can not only be directly applied to the surface, but also added to varnishes, primers and the like.

Formation of spots when drilling and how to avoid it

This problem is due to the unevenness of the density of the tree. For some types of wood (for example, walnut and mahogany), spotting can be attractive. But in most cases spontaneously formed spots spoil the product. Avoid this defect is possible if you use a special conditioner, the layer of which closes the pores and will prevent the penetration of the stove into the depth of the material. After treatment with conditioner, use a coloring gel that has the ability not to spread, but to lie down evenly.

To obtain the desired shade, stains of different colors from the same manufacturer can be mixed together. In addition, it is possible to change the tone of the stained wood if another wood stain is applied to the painted wood, the price of which may differ from the cost of the stain used for processing the first layer. Thus, you can save on purchasing a second expensive dye package and expand the range of shades for wood toning.
