Who is a businessman and how to become one?

What is the word "merchant" associated with? Business, trade, sales, entrepreneurship and even speculation. That's right: businessmen are in general terms people engaged in trade. But does this mean that it is possible to call any worker of this sphere: from an individual entrepreneur to a sales consultant? Is there such a profession and where is it taught?
