White screen on the laptop and other side defects of the image: the causes of the appearance and methods of diagnosis

Some users sometimes state the problem that when the laptop is working, a white band appears on the screen (several vertical and horizontal bars) or the screen does not work at all. The software does not always solve this situation. But here you can diagnose causes even at home.

White screen on laptop or strip: the reasons for the appearance

In general, not only white horizontal or vertical bars may appear on the screen, indicating a hardware failure.

Often you can see ripples, mirror the content, darken or completely turn off the screen. What could cause such malfunctions? As the main reasons, most experts indicate the following:

  • Overheating or failure of the graphics card;
  • Damage to the system board;
  • Violations in the work of the matrix screen;
  • Damage to the loop between the main unit and the screen;
  • System problems.

Software crashes, when laptop screen does not turn on, are not so common, and they are connected basically only with incorrectly installed video adapter drivers or attempts to use programs with the requirements above the configuration of the graphics accelerator. Sometimes the problem can be manifested when trying to overclock video cards. But in most cases this is a violation in the work of hardware on the hardware (physical) level.

Diagnosis and troubleshooting of software problems

If a completely white screen appears on the laptop - this may indicate the hang of some currently running application or the "shutdown" of the drivers.

The first problem is solved by the forced shutdown of the program through the "Task Manager", called by the "three-finger" combination Ctrl + Alt + Del or the taskmgr command in the "Run" menu (Win + R).

The second problem, when a white screen appears on the laptop, can be fixed by reinstalling the drivers. To do this, you must first just reboot the device, and then install or update the appropriate graphics chip drivers at least through the "Device Manager". But you can also use special utilities to automatically update the drivers not only of the video card, but of all other devices present in the configuration.

Sometimes, to the fact that the white screen on the laptop does not react at all to any actions, resource-intensive applications can lead (most often these are games whose system requirements are much higher than those supported by the video card). In this case, it is better to finish such an application first (if Device Manager does not help, you can force the notebook to shutdown and restart), and then completely delete it.

Testing the video card

Now a few words about the appearance of bands, ripples and other effects. The most common cause is overheating of the video card. It is overloaded, and the cooler can not cope with the cooling. You can, of course, that specialists apply an additional layer of thermal paste, but this will only help for a while.

Determine that the reason is just the graphics adapter can be quite simple. To do this, simply connect a fixed monitor to the laptop via the standard VGA connector. If the failure effects appear on it, then it's the video adapter and it needs to be replaced. Maybe it's a problem with the motherboard, but you can not get to it without the special knowledge and skills of an electronics engineer.

If there are no bands and visual effects on the second monitor, it can be concluded that these are malfunctions in the operation of the matrix and the connecting loop.

Screen matrix check

You can also test the matrix of the screen yourself. For this, a partial deformation technique is used. First, try a little pressure on the matrix in the places of the greatest accumulation of bands, and then try to bend it a little in the horizontal plane.

If the colors change during deformation, the matrix must be replaced. The same should be done if the ripple is noticeable or a wide white bar runs across the entire screen, or the image looks like a negative, or the colors are replaced during the entire system boot-up (even when entering the BIOS settings).

Is the circuit good?

If the laptop screen does not turn on, the problem is clearly the damage of the connecting stub between the lid and the keyboard unit. At the stage of loading, bands or ripples can sometimes appear, replacing the black screen.

If they appear, try to quickly close and open the lid, watching the image. Any changes will be a sign of the failure of the loop (sometimes the image may flicker, ripple, additional lines and columns appear in the form of white pixels, etc.).

The white screen on the laptop: what to do?

Finally, the question remains how to eliminate such problems. From a programmatic point of view, everything is clear. Two methods have been described above. And it's better not to install programs or games, the requirements of which the laptop simply will not pull. In all other cases, when the cause of the breakdown is determined at least initially, the repair or replacement of the problem component is inevitable.
