Where is the UN headquarters - a common "international zone"

It is obvious that everyone knows such an international organization as the UN. It covers many areas of life, for example:

  • Carries out economic missions;
  • Conducts a worldwide disarmament policy;
  • Promotes the development of a favorable political and economic and financial environment;
  • Develops measures to ensure environmental safety;
  • Studies the demographic processes in the world and much more.

But not everyone knows where the UN headquarters is located. And also that the organization has three additional support offices - two in Europe and one in East Africa.

United Nations Headquarters in New York

The central institution, or directly the headquarters, is the office where the main working departments are located. Its territorial location in the eastern part of Manhattan, on United Nations Square, 760, on the East River embankment and at the intersection of 42 and 48 streets.

For mailing it is necessary to know the address of the administrative building where the UN headquarters is located: United Nations, New York, NY 10017.

The UN Headquarters is a common "international zone"

A plot of land with an area of 73 thousand square meters. M. Is an "international zone belonging to all member states of the organization". But under the agreement of the United States authorities and the organization, in the territory where the UN headquarters is located, there is still US judicial jurisdiction.

The building was opened in 1951 and has 39 floors. Organizational meetings are held here, the most important issues are resolved and key decisions of international importance are adopted.

The UN was established in October 1945, and its first meetings were held in the capital of Great Britain - London, as the organization did not have its own building. They adopted a resolution that the main office will be located in Lake Success, a village near Long Island. Beginning in August 1946, meetings of the Assembly and the Security Council were held in the suburbs of New York, and in December of the same year John D. Rockefeller, Jr. allocated $ 8.5 million to purchase the land and erect the building of the main office of the United Nations .

Central Headquarters: problems with choice

An interesting fact is that many member states voted against the construction of the building in New York and offered their options for locating the central office. For example, Canada wished to host a headquarters in Ontario, on the island of Navi, near the Niagara Falls. Many voted for this proposal, since the place was located on the border between the two countries, but in the end, New York was chosen.

Until now, politicians consider such a choice unfair, do not understand why the UN headquarters is in New York and make proposals to transfer the administration to a more suitable place, in their opinion. So, in 2009, Libya's President M. Gaddafi proposed an alternative: to locate the representation of the organization in Beijing or Delhi, because, he believed, it was the East that played a key role in the development of mankind.

This is not the only office where the UN headquarters is located. The organization is housed on different continents. Offices only four. The main one is in New York in Manhattan, auxiliary, or regional:

  • In Switzerland (Geneva);
  • In Austria (Vienna);
  • In Kenya (Nairobi).

Geneva headquarters in Europe

Where is the European headquarters of the United Nations - the second most important office after the American one?

In Geneva at the Palais des Nations. The administrative and leading international departments have concentrated here, meetings and forums of various commissions and committees are held. The office also deals with advisory, training and advocacy work.

The Geneva Palace of Nations, which houses the UN headquarters in Europe, includes five administrative buildings connected by crossings on the second and third floors. The complex is located in the park zone, which is the government district of Geneva. The building itself was built in 1937, it housed the League of Nations. In 1996, the Palace was transferred to the European office, despite the fact that Switzerland was admitted to the UN only after 6 years.

It is noteworthy that before the entrance to the building where the UN headquarters is located, one can see a sculpture in the form of a giant chair with a broken leg - a symbolic protest against the use of anti-personnel mines.

The UN's working and administrative bodies, agencies and cents have over 60,000 employees from 170 countries. At the head office in New York, one third of the entire staff is located.
