When they plant tulips in the fall?

The brightest and one of the first spring flowers bloom fairly quickly after emergence. It is necessary to decide when tulips are planted in a particular region and climatic conditions. Some species of this plant require the annual excavation of bulbs, but there are varieties that grow beautifully in the same place for years.

Soil preparation and timing

To the plant gave a lush greens and saturated with buds buds, work should start in the fall. How to properly plant the tulips in a new place, if the previous site is depleted and requires rest and recovery? For bulbs choose friable soil, in places without a close rise of groundwater to the surface. In the soil must necessarily make clean river sand, which is mixed with peat or moss sphagnum. But nutritious additional fertilizing, such as manure or humus, is laid in the ground for a year or two before planting. It is better to fertilize the land with such means, which will "rest."

Determining when to plant tulips, it is best to rely on the experience of local gardeners. In the middle zone, the creation of new holes and the germination of bulbs in the open ground is carried out from the middle to the end of September and lasts until mid-October. In the southern regions, these terms are shifted to the beginning and the middle of October. The main rule: Rooting should occur before the onset of frost.

Preparing the bulbs for planting

When tulips are planted, the prepared material must be sorted by size. From it will depend on the location of the flower and the depth of future holes. In the world of professional gardeners and breeders, the following classification of tulips and their bulbs exists:

  • The first analysis - the size of the planting material to 3.2 cm. With it, you can get the largest plants with huge peduncles. Such tulips are usually used only for winter forcing;
  • 2nd analysis - diameter 2.5-3.1 cm. These varieties are not used for forcing, but they also give very large peduncles;
  • 3rd analysis (2,0-2,4 cm) - when tulips of these sizes are planted, long stems with medium buds are produced. However, the germination of these varieties is only 50% and depends on terrain and weather;
  • Children of the 1st and 2nd parings have dimensions of 1.4-1.9 cm and less than 1.4 cm. The 1st analysis is used for independent cultivation of planting material or creating tiny flower beds and pots with tulips. And small onions up to 1.3 cm do not bloom, they are suitable only for growing.

The selected planting material is carefully studied, discarding damaged or diseased bulbs. When the tulips are planted for the first time, they first soak the onion rootlets in a pale solution of potassium permanganate for 15-20 minutes to prevent contamination of the soil or the future plant by accidental diseases.

Planting tulips in the open ground

The depth of the holes is determined by the size of the bulb, but usually adhere to the triple diameter of the planting material. That is, for a tulip 2 cm in size, a pit of 6 cm will be required, and a pit of 6 cm, and 4 cm - 12 cm, etc. If the ground in winter has a habit of freezing deep into the depths, beds need to be covered from the top with foliage 8-12 cm. If the temperature does not go down More than -4 o C - no shelter is needed. You need to remember the three rules for tulips - good drainage, the correct depth and do not freeze the bulbs. Observing these simple conditions, it will be enough just to get a magnificent bloom and a unique tart aroma in your garden.
