What is remarkable about the Great Ussuri island?

The Great Ussuri island is an actual topic of today. Such popularity is due to some circumstances, which were promulgated by the media a year ago. The text of this article will help to reveal the essence of the problem.

Where is the Great Ussuri Island?

The geographic location of the island in question is the largest river in the Far East, the famous Amur. To be more precise, a little below the mouth of the Ussuri River, the northern part of the island is washed by the Amur, the eastern part - the village of Ussuriysk - now located within the Industrial District of the city of Khabarovsk. From the north-west side, it adjoins the Chinese island of Tarabarov. The islands share the duct.

Another channel, Kazakevicheva, separates the Great Ussuri island from the southwest from the territory of the PRC. The eastern part is washed by the waters of the Amur Channel by the Russian Federation. As the water level in the Amur is not constant, the territory of the island varies from 327 to 350 square kilometers from time to time (in other sources - about 254 square kilometers). Thus, the greatest width is 10 kilometers, and the length from west to east is 38 kilometers.

History of the island in the 20th and 21st centuries

Beginning in 1929, two large objects - the island of Tarabarov and the Great Ussuri - as well as the nearby islands became much smaller than the Soviet state. When the USSR collapsed after the well-known events of 1991, these territories became part of the Russian Federation.

During the conflict, which arose in 1967 between once friendly states, the Chinese tried to challenge the ownership of the Great Ussuri island.

Two large neighboring powers in 2004 had previously concluded an agreement that was ratified the following year. Thanks to this document, the PRC got the western part of the Great Ussuriysk, the whole Tarabarov Island, some small islands. This step of the Russian leadership of the public did not like.

The final designation of the line of the Russian-Chinese border (demarcation) was held on October 14, 2008. So the Great Ussuri island began to belong to another country. China was pleased to annex its significant part to Heilongjiang Province. Russia owns 174 square meters. Km with a population of almost 500 people.

Chinese part

The Chinese, with their own pragmatism and diligence, undertook to develop a new territory, gradually turning into a recreational zone to attract tourists. At the moment there is a state reserve with a frontier post. The created hotel complex called "The World Square" includes wooden buildings, pagoda height of 81 meters and other objects. Communication with the mainland is by means of a bridge.

Numerous tourists are attracted to the Great Ussuri island. Infrastructure is developing now.

The Russian side of the Great Ussuri island

Local Russian authorities, following the example of their Chinese counterparts, intended to create a tourist and recreational zone. And it was supposed to give her a special visa regime for foreign tourists, the number of which within a month should be about 200 thousand.

Ultimately, the Great Ussuri island should turn into a territory of advanced development (TOP). In particular, the government plans to build the International Expocenter, the International Youth Camp, the Safari Park, the Palace of Martial Arts, the International Equestrian Center and other significant facilities.

What is the essence of the problem that has arisen on the island?

For the Russian part of the island are the following acute issues that need to be addressed.

In 2013, the island was subjected to severe flooding, which forced the regional authorities to prohibit construction works in the territory subject to the risk of flooding. The ban is still relevant today. The bridge to the island of Bolshoy Ussuriysk allowed to arrange the delivery of many products and other materials, but this did not solve the problems of the local population.

At one time it was decided to demolish all apartment buildings: 4 - in the village of Bychikha and 11 - in the village of Ussuriysk, which locals call Chumka. But the fact is that in one of these buildings in the village of Ussuriysk there is a single store selling products. Among the multifamily buildings are private houses. The indicated order of the local authorities also applies to them. Almost half of them have no documentation. This category of buildings is called "samostroem." Due to various reasons, not all tenants agreed to move to the mainland. Some families do not have enough cash to pay for utilities in a new location. The other - I just did not want to leave the habitable dwellings, which I got used to.

Deadlock disputes

For a long period, there were unstable electricity supplies and water supply. And the question of central heating remained unresolved. The fact that the village is remote from the city causes certain inconveniences connected with the organization and maintenance of the infrastructure, i.e. educational and medical institutions, the post of the district police officer, etc.

The village is an obstacle to the creation of an international tourist area. Especially foreign investment has already been attracted. The large Ussuri island can become a developed infrastructure only after all disputable issues are resolved.
