What if the baby choked? First aid

What if the child choked on a small detail during the game, crumbs during lunch, milk when feeding or water while bathing ? Many mothers helplessly shake the baby in all directions, fall into a hysterical panic or call faster to an ambulance, leaving the victim unattended. Situations are different, but you always need to be calm and clearly know the rules of first aid.

Why does the baby choke on feeding?

The baby of every mother can choke on milk while feeding. The reasons for this can be severe hunger, copious milk allocation, incorrect position of the baby during feeding.

During a severe hunger, the baby begins to suck the breast quickly, not having enough time to swallow the milk, as a result of which the baby chokes on feeding. In this case, it is often necessary to put the baby to the breast, so that he ate little and learned to eat slowly.

A woman can have a lot of milk, which when touched by the baby begins to pour "fountain", as a result of which it chokes. In this case, it is necessary or expressed before feeding, that the milk is delivered evenly, or periodically the breast is pulled out.

Also, the baby chokes on the fact that the liquid enters the mouth and nose, due to an incorrect position during feeding. His mouth must be above his mother's breast. The position should be chosen for each mother independently: one is convenient to feed in the position with a straight back, the second - lying down, and the third - in a tilted position on the chair.

What should I do if the baby chokes on feeding?

If the baby chokes with milk, he starts coughing and giving mom help signals (crying, coughing, noisy breathing, turning away from the chest). Rarely there are cases when each feeding is accompanied by a flood of the child, in which the liquid flows from the nose and mouth. In this case, you need to consult a pediatrician.

If the baby can not self-cough up excess milk, saliva and starts to choke, then you need to do the following.

  1. Put the child on your hand, pressing it on the stomach area and holding the baby's chin, that is, the hand needs to wrap around the baby completely. Further tilt the baby a little forward and pat on the back. From a simultaneous depression of the stomach and patting, the cough increases, which helps to restore breathing. If it's hard to hold on your hand, put the baby on your elongated foot face down and do the same.
  2. Another way to provide first aid is to put the baby on your back with your head down and make an indirect heart massage with two fingers (the index and middle finger on the baby's sternum). Pressed and allowed to straighten his chest. In severe cases, these two alternate.

What should I do if my child chokes for three years?

Kids of this age like to try all the items for taste and strength. They can swallow small detail during the game, find screws and bolts on the floor, choke on bread, meat, fish bone, candy, compote and even their own saliva.

In this case, you need to remember one thing - if the child starts to ring loudly, loudly cough, then you should not interfere and watch the foreign body exit. Cough and vomiting are the protective mechanisms of the body when foreign objects enter. And illiterate intervention can lead to the fact that the foreign body will fail further.

If the preschooler does not cope (this is evidenced by signs of choking: noisy choking breath, a quiet weak cough, blue skin, grasping the affected area of the neck, drooling and open mouth), then it is necessary to induce vomiting. To do this, click on the root of the tongue, with the face of the child turned down to the floor.

If this does not help, then the edge of the palm between the shoulder blades should be made several times pats. Note that the child in this position should lie on his belly on the other arm or an elongated leg.

Help for older children

Children who can not be kept on weight on one hand, render first aid in a different way:

  • Put the child with his back to him and grasp the area of the belly with his hands;
  • The palm should be between the ribs and the navel;
  • This hand is squeezed into a fist that grabs the other with a brush;
  • Dilute the elbows to the sides and press the stomach several times from the bottom up.

These actions must be repeated until the foreign body has flown out. This method can be used if the child is choked with candy, a large piece of food, fruit. If a schoolboy is choked with a fish bone, then one should not make sharp movements, but also drink with water and eat up a crust of bread, trying to push it.

Look in the throat of the child, if you see the bone, then remove it with tweezers. If there are no tools, run to the nearest hospital for a surgeon who will pull out the bone in a matter of minutes. In case of deep penetration, surgical intervention with a bronchoscope is required.

If the child choked, but did not say anything to his parents ?!

Even adolescents can swallow small items (coins, badges, screws, beads, chewing gum) while playing, experimenting, focussing, during the hasty ingestion of food or accidentally with a sharp sigh. Having swallowed an object, children often hide this fact, fearing negativity on the part of parents, without experiencing at the beginning unpleasant sensations.

But swallowed objects can go in two ways. In the first case, they enter the intestine and come out in a natural way. In the second case, the foreign body can become stuck in the esophagus, causing increased salivation. In this case, the child may experience anxiety and pain in the chest or abdomen.

In serious cases, a schoolboy may suffocate, turn blue or lose consciousness. If the child chokes, first aid is expressed in the call of specialists. Even in cases of panic and confusion, put the phone on speakerphone and follow the instructions of a specialist.

If the child is unconscious

If you find a pale kid unconscious, then the first thing you need to restore his breathing. Turn the victim on his side, tilt his head slightly back, lifting his chin. Without medical assistance in this case can not do, but you can not leave the child unattended. If there is breathing, call a doctor and check the victim's breathing after a few seconds.

What should I do if my child chokes and does not breathe? Help is expressed in artificial respiration and indirect heart massage. To do this, keep the victim in the same position, gain air and gently exhale it in the mouth and nose of the child. Pay attention, the smaller the age of children, the less their lung volume. Such exhalations need to be done about five.

Then combine two artificial exhalations with an indirect heart massage (about 15 times press on the chest) with periodic listening to the breath. The palms (one on top of the other) should be two centimeters below the mentally drawn line between the nipples. When pressed, the chest should bend by one third, the movements should be strong and sharp. Remember, with an indirect massage of the heart, the victim must lie on a hard surface on his back.

Help in the water park and swimming pool

What if the child is drowned in water in a water park, pool or bath? And such tragic situations can be even among caring parents who turned away for one minute. Some mothers do not even realize that their obedient child can slip in the bathroom and go under the water for a second.

Help is provided by any of the above methods. Turn the little child down, laying on his elongated leg or palm, and by tapping-tapping between the shoulder blades, let the liquid run out.

The baby unconsciously makes artificial respiration with an indirect massage of the heart. Up to a year of pressing on the chest, you make two fingers, and the older children palm. The tongue must not block the sky.

But in order not to allow tragedies, it should be remembered that even older children can choke in the bathroom (relax and fall asleep), so periodically ask them about their health or ask them to sing songs while bathing. In the reservoirs and places of a crowded stay, do not take your eyes off the child. Even slight fright can lead to panic and tragedy.

Basic rules if the child suffocates:

  • If the baby chokes and starts coughing, then the parent should quietly encourage coughing out the foreign body;
  • If the child has choked with a fish bone, first aid is expressed in calling specialists, going to the surgeon or independently pulling a foreign body with tweezers;
  • If there are signs of suffocation, then apply the above described actions and call specialists, without leaving the victim unattended;
  • If you do not know or forgot how to render the first medical aid in the form of pats on the back and an indirect massage of the heart, dial an emergency number, put on a speakerphone and follow the instructions of a specialist;
  • If the child is unconscious, but breathing is heard, turn over on your side and call specialists, opening the doors wide;
  • If the victim does not breathe, do artificial respiration, within one minute call an ambulance, open the door, repeat exhalations with an indirect heart massage for half an hour.

Situations are different, and not everyone knows what to do if the child chokes at home or on the street, and sometimes life depends on minutes! To render medical help competently, it is better to take courses from doctors and in case of tragedy it is correct to do artificial respiration and indirect heart massage.
