What corresponds to the size of A4?

Every day every one of us has to work with documents, letters, keep magazines in hand, keep correspondence or type documents electronically. Carrying out these routine tasks, we do not think about the size of the document that we see, but it is interesting, why is it exactly like that, and what does the known size of A4 mean in general? Let's see what the format is.

A4 paper size

A4 is a well-known paper format adopted by the single metric ISO-216 standards. The size of A4 in cm is 21 * 29.7. It is quite easy to learn these quantities: all you need is a centimeter tape (ruler) and the sheet of paper itself. Well, why these sizes were chosen and why this accuracy to millimeters - let's try to figure it out.

A bit of history

As you know, all ingenious - it's easy! Size A4 was designed in such a way that if it is cut in half, you will get two halves identical in proportion to the original size. For the original version, a canvas with an area of 1 square meter was taken (and if it is quite accurate, then with sides of 118.9 centimeters (length) * 84.1 centimeters, and all known dimensions are its derivatives, divided into a certain format. For example, For example, if a sheet of A0 format is divided in half, you will get two sheets of A1 format, etc. Thus, A4 sheet size is half of sheet A3, with a constant aspect ratio, which is described by the Lichtenberg relation.

In principle, at first glance, such an insignificant element of standardization of formats brought to life certain certainty that, of course, affected all stages of work with documentation. As early as the beginning of the last century, there were no uniform sizes for business documents, letters and papers. Each factory specializing in the production of paper made its size at its discretion, and this, in turn, introduced significant inconvenience to the daily turnover of documents.

In 1768, G. Lichtenberg (German scientist) suggested that a sheet of paper, the aspect ratio of which can be represented as the ratio of one to the square root of the two, will have the size of 2 identical rectangles (if they are previously folded in half). Another German mathematician (V.Portsmann), based on this idea, suggested it as a basis for standardizing the paper size. And after a few years, the whole of Europe, and a little later the whole world, has moved to unified standards.

Applications

To date, there are many formats, and even whole series of them. Some are used extremely rarely, while others are firmly embedded in our daily lives. Undoubtedly, the most popular size is A4. It is also called printer paper, office paper, plain paper or standard paper. But this does not mean that this size is used only in everyday life, on the contrary, it is the standard for all types of reporting documentation, printing and typing. Moreover, professional polygraphs often use the A4 format as well. The size of most forms, accounting records, scientific papers, etc. Corresponds exactly to this format.

Size of paper and margins

Ironically, but in our time of high technology and computers, this sphere has the greatest impact on life in general and communication in particular. In addition, the lion's share of printed works is made up of electronic versions, and in A4 format. The A4 sheet size is 210 * 297 millimeters.

It should be taken into account that when working with computer programs by typing, it is first of all necessary to check the settings of the paper size and the size of the fields, since even with the "default" setting there may be some discrepancies.

The installation and the size of the fields are governed by GOST recommendations and must comply with the following values (minimum):

  • Left, upper, lower margins - 20 mm;
  • Right field - 10 mm.

Standard Photo Frames

The frames appeared long before the appearance of the photographs themselves. True, they had a somewhat different purpose and served to demonstrate artistic works of art. They were made of all sorts of materials-from an affordable tree to gold and framing with precious stones. Therefore, when the photo appeared, there were no problems with how it can be formalized. And practically in every house one could meet not one picture hanging on the wall or standing on a table in a beautiful frame.

With the development of the photography industry, the production of frames developed and improved. In place of massive wooden and cast-iron came light, refined and no less durable and durable products made of plastics, metal alloys, glass and so on. Their production and use became more and more a mass phenomenon. But despite this, in every corner of the world the standards were the same. Thus, the dimensions of the frame A4 correspond to the size of the web of the same format with a certain tolerance and can be in two versions: 20 cm by 30 cm and 21 cm by 30 cm.

Conclusion

Everyone knows the International Standard of Paper (ISO) has a number of series (with subcategories in them) of standardized standard sizes. But the most popular format today is the A4 size. Printing of this format is supported by all standard printers, without exception. Size A4 (210 * 297 cm) - universal, standard and most frequently used document format, both physical (printed) and electronic version. Knowing its parameters, you are always right and correct to be able to perform any work.
