The bright history of the city begins in the IX century. During its existence the settlement was in the composition of many states. Forty times it was conquered and 38 completely rebuilt after the devastation.

Currently, Belgrade - a major cultural and industrial center of the state, is among the nominees for the title "European Capital of Culture - 2020". He leads the list, which can be referred to as "Major cities of Serbia".

Novi Sad (New Garden)

The second largest city in Serbia is Novi Sad. Its area is 130 km², the population is 340 thousand people. Located in the north of the republic, it is the administrative center of the autonomous province of Vojvodina. The city began to be built in 1694 as a merchant settlement on the banks of the Danube.

Modern Novi Sad is a high-tech cultural city with a multinational population. This settlement is of great importance for a state like Serbia. The cities are all important enough, but Novi Sad - in particular, as the industrial, tourist and other spheres are developing in its territory, replenishing the country's budget.

Kragujevac

The city is the capital of the Shumadiy District, located in the central region of the republic. The settlement was built at the end of the XV century. Until 1815 was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. This town is proud of Serbia! A city like him is simply not there. This feature is due to the fact that Kragujevac is the first capital of Serbia. In the city for the first time in the territory of the state was built a gymnasium, a theater, a court and the first newspaper was published.

Subotica

This city is located in the north of Serbia, 10 km from the border with Hungary, and is part of the autonomous region of Vojvodina. The population is 105 thousand people. The proximity to the Hungarian border affected the national composition of the inhabitants. There are more Hungarians here than the Serbs. In percentage terms: 33% - Hungarians, 29% - Serbs. Also in the city live Croats, Moldovans, Yugoslavs, Gypsies.

The city was founded in 1653, it is one of the youngest settlements of the country, but with no less interesting history. For a long time it was a frontier center, previously it crossed the border of the Ottoman Empire. Prior to 1918 Subotica belonged to Austria-Hungary, and after the First World War the city became part of the Serbian kingdom.

Of the sights recommended to visit: the City Hall, the Palace of Reich, Neo-Gothic St. George's Church, the Cathedral of Teresa of Avila. If you look at the beautiful cities of Serbia, then Subotica can be put in the top three of the list.

Nis

The largest city in the southern region of Serbia. The most ancient settlement of the Balkan Peninsula. In the city was born the founder of Constantinople, the greatest Roman emperor, who spread Christianity throughout Europe, - Constantine the Great.

Through Nis passed the main transport route from Europe to Greece and Turkey.

Currently, the city has about 300 thousand inhabitants. It is the third largest in Serbia. Nis is a major political and religious center of the republic, it houses the residence of the Metropolitan of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
