Trieste. Italy. North Adriatic

Trieste is an ancient city in the north-east of Italy. It is possible that this is not the most famous of Italian cities, but it has been known since antiquity. Curious is the very place in which Trieste is located. Italy in this place is just ending - this is its most northeast point. Very near the border of Slovenia. At this point the Adriatic ends and the Balkans begin, naturally, the borderline position imposed its misprint on the local flavor.

Trieste, Italy. Features of a remote province

This city is characterized by its atypicality and dissimilarity to others. It is quite common opinion that this is the "most non-Italian" of all Italian cities. This opinion has good grounds, it is usually confirmed by those who first came to Trieste. Italy, which everyone knows and loves, looks a little different. As stated above, the outward appearance of the city was affected by its border position and the fact that throughout its long history, Trieste was not always part of Italy: for quite a long period of time it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The entire Adriatic coast adjoining the city was officially designated on maps as the "Austrian Riviera". Austrian influence can be traced in the external appearance of the city today. This is noted by those who managed to drive the entire Apennine peninsula from south to north, having the final destination of the route the city of Trieste. Italy regained its sovereignty over this part of the Adriatic only after the First World War, and by that time the appearance of the town was already sufficiently formed by representatives of the Viennese architectural tradition. Nevertheless, the city is interesting and attractive for tourists, perhaps, it is its atypical.

Trieste, Italy. City map and attractions on it

There is much less hassle, noise and crush, which can not but cause positive emotions for tourists on this northern shore of the Adriatic Sea. The city is calm, leisurely and disposes to walking tours through the historic quarters of the center. Monuments and attractions in it are little less than in other historical provinces of Northern Italy. The most interesting part is its southern part with the Grand Canal, the area of the Unification of Italy - sculptural groups and a fountain on it. The Grand Canal on both its sides is built up with rather interesting old buildings in the neoclassical style. The white-and-white Miramare castle on the coastal rock is quite famous and outwardly expressive. It is indicated on all tourist schemes, from the city center to it about eight kilometers. Against the backdrop of this magnificent monument of architecture, tourists are very fond of taking pictures.
