Vera Matveevna (woman, on whose behalf the story is narrated), as already mentioned, taught for more than a quarter of a century. When the granddaughter was born, the family council decided to entrust her to raising the girl. Firstly, the son and daughter-in-law worked as archaeologists and were constantly on the road. Secondly, who is better than Vera Matveyevna, a teacher with a great experience, will cope with this difficult task?

Elizabeth - the granddaughter of the main character - was an unusual girl. Hearing once about her namesake, the Empress, she decided not to respond once and for all to a diminutive version of her name. From now on, despite a very tender age, she was called Elizabeth.

Vera Matveyevna often told her granddaughter about her rich pedagogical experience. One day she told the girl about Van Below. This teenager differed from his peers with absolute impatience to the slightest manifestations of injustice.

Elizabeth loved to listen to stories about Van. Vera Matveyevna had only one photo with him, a black and white picture, on which a sixth grade pupil was depicted. Schoolchildren lined up in five rows. On the day when the photo was taken, Vanya argued with his friends that he would be able to restrain himself on a complex structure consisting of two chairs. He won the argument. Evidence of this - a photo on which he is the third in the fifth row.

Events, which Vera Matveevna recalls, occurred in the thirty-seventh year. What made the heroine of the work "The Third in the Fifth Row" return to the past? The content and meaning of the work can be stated in a few words: a person of advanced age recognizes and recognizes mistakes committed in his youth.

Vera Matveevna always knew how to act in this or that situation. And I never listened to anyone's opinion. The son of Volodya studied in her class. In order to convince herself and others in her impartial professional attitude, she underestimated his assessments, criticized his writing for the whole class.

But there was a student in the class who saw injustice in this, and therefore protested in every possible way. One day he even went on a hunger strike. This truth-seeker was Vanya. It was he who once decided to give up food until the class teacher corrected the deuce to Volodya. The evaluation, according to Belov, was unfairly imposed. Vera Matveyevna had to yield.

Volodya did not like mathematics. Moreover, he was panic-stricken with the teacher who led the subject. Once, when the students had to write an important test work, someone locked up a mathematician in the teacher's room. The control did not take place. The next day Belov confessed that he had locked up the teacher. It was easy to guess that he did it for Volodya's sake.

Alyona

This was the name of the kindergarten teacher who visited Elizabeth. Alena was not only kind, but beautiful and incredibly feminine. She was loved not only by children. Alena also sympathized with the fathers of her wards. Soon the popularity of the young teacher became too noticeable. Mothers took up arms against Alena, remembered that in the kindergarten she was accidentally, that is, she had no special education. A collective statement was issued with the demand to change the teacher. And suddenly Elizabeth remembered Vanya Belova and decided to follow his example. Namely - to go on a hunger strike.

Vera Matveyevna told her granddaughter about the conflict student, so that she did not repeat his tricks. But it turned out differently. Elizabeth fell in love with Vanya. She began to imitate him. And just like Belova, the girl managed to achieve her: Alena remained at her post.

Lisa's disease

The girl with a severe allergic attack was in the hospital. This event is the culmination in the work "The third in the fifth row." The plot of the story is simple. An elderly teacher recalls a teenager, who for her once was an evil genius, a complex person, a problem child. And only in the most difficult moments of life she understands who this famous Vanya Belov was.

Elizabeth is taken to resuscitation. A good nurse is lying to a woman, assuring her that the girl is fine. And a few meters from Vera Matveyevna doctors fight for the life of the child. The main one is Ivan Belov. The woman decides that this is the one Vanya, which she could not remember without shudder for many years. And she suddenly realizes that only he can help her. Only such a determined, uncompromising person as Belov, can save lives ...

Letter

Everything turned out. Elizabeth was rescued. The doctor, thanks to which the girl remained alive, was indeed called Ivan Belov. But it was not him.

A few days later, Vera Matveyevna wrote a letter to her son, in which she reminded him of a friend who had once saved him from a deuce in a control room. And only then did I learn the truth. In the teachers' room mathematics was not locked at all by Vanya, but by Vera Matveyevna's son. Belov took the blame on himself. The heroine of the story suddenly realized how unfair was this boy. He was not a complicated teenager. He was a man who only knew how to empathize, to make a sacrifice. And Vera Matveyevna decided that it was time to meet and explain with her former student.

The fate of Vanya Belova

The teacher found the house of his parents. They did not immediately recognize her. When Vera Matveyevna asked about Vanya, her mother took out a small sheet from the box. It was an old letter received in 1945. Ivan Belov died in the last month of the war, in a battle near Penzlau.

Vanya Belov was able to feel compassion from a young age. He was always ready to sacrifice for the sake of another person. Even if such actions knowingly led to unpleasant consequences.
