Cameron was able not only to develop the prequel stories, but even more intrigue and intimidate the audience, and also retained the main cast of the film predecessor. In the second "Terminator" it's Arnold Schwarzenegger and then-wife of the director Linda Hamilton. In the horror about the monsters-"strangers" and the opposing Helen Ripley in the role of a brave heroine again shot inimitable Sigourney Weaver. So, the sequel - this is often a fairly successful project, the creation of which is dictated by the commercial success of some blockbuster.

Thus, franchises are born

Often the literary basis of the film consists of several parts, and the whole plot does not fit into the framework of a single film production. Then the sequel is, for example, the adaptation of the second volume or the next book of the same author with the same characters. Sometimes this results in a "serial" saga. So it happened, for example, with a cycle about Harry Potter or adventures in mysterious Narnia, with "Twilight", with "Godfather". Francis Ford Coppola, removing the continuation of his "Godfather", was able to block the achievements of the prequel for all indicators. If the first part became the owner of three "Oscars", the second won 6 out of 11, which was nominated. In the "Godfather 2" the line of Vito Corleone's younger son, Michael (Al Pacino) is more developed, plus a retrospective showing the life of the young Vito (Robert De Niro deserved the Film Academy award 100%!). Here's the movie "Twilight. Saga. New Moon "was not so successful. Although the spectator's excitement was provided (there are enough fans for the saga), but because the second book itself is somewhat tightened and sluggish, there is not much action in it (which "ricocheted" to the next sequels), the film was not very interesting.

Do not overtake or overtake!

If we consider weak attempts at continuations, then the not very successful sequel is also a fairly frequent phenomenon. The filmmakers believe so much that it is possible to achieve more on the crest of the already existing success, so to say "catch up and overtake" that they launch frankly floppy things into production. David Cronenberg's film "The Fly" with a charming (even in a mutated form) infernal brunette-giant Jeff Goldblum and sweet Gina Davis became a classic of the genre. Despite the fact that it was shot almost 30 years ago, the thriller is interesting and original. What the director of the 2nd part, Chris Wallace did, is in no way comparable to the original. In the same way, Jan de Bont did not manage to "climb the tops" of his own "Speed" in the continuation of the tape. And correctly Keanu Reeves did not want to take part in "Speed 2"! The sequel is also the movie "Hannibal", which tells of the same genius man Lecter, who became the main character of the "Silence of the Lambs". Neither Sir Anthony Hopkins nor the fact that Ridley Scott was in the director's chair was saved. By the way, Jodie Foster, awarded an Oscar for Silence of the Lambs, also flatly refused to embody the image of Clarissa for the second time. It is impossible to call this thriller a failure, it was highly appreciated. But in comparison with the prequel he loses.

So the sequel can become an independent masterpiece or discredit the idea of the predecessor.
