In medicine, so-called soft bandages are most widely used. In their function they are divided into medicinal, immobilizing, protective, correcting and pressing bandages.

Medicinal products

When applying a medicinal bandage to the affected area, medicinal products are applied in the form of an ointment, a powder, a gel or a solution. Often, the drug is also impregnated with a material that will be in direct contact with the wound. Top is applied an aseptic bandage.

Protective

Bandages of this type are used to prevent secondary infection of the wound and protect it from external influences. A simple version of this bandage is a usual aseptic dressing. It also includes occlusive dressings and film-forming aerosols. Occlusive bandages are used to seal the body cavity, for example, with a penetrating wound of the chest.

Pressing

Pressing dressings are used to stop bleeding. Place them in the place of the damaged vessel. The technique of applying a pressure bandage is to tightly wrap the damaged area with a bandage. In this case, a gauze pad or a roll of bandage is applied to the wound site. The dressing must be necessarily tight. The application of a pressure bandage during bleeding occurs in alternating divergent directions. The bandage tours lie on top of the gauze pad with the maximum density. The same bandaging can be performed with a muscle rupture. Pressing dressings can also be used to create uniform pressure on the limbs. In case of varicose veins, for example, a foot bandage is performed with an elastic bandage.

Immobilizing

Bandages of this kind are used to fix various parts of the body. For example, the use of special knee pads in sports medicine to fix a damaged ligament apparatus. Also, an immobilizing bandage is applied to fix the damaged part of the body in order to transport the patient to a medical institution.

Corrective

This type of dressing fixes the body in a certain position for a long time. They are used to correct an acquired or inherited defect.
