The car "eight" - the car with a forward drive. The model was produced from 1984 to 2003 in several modifications. Experience in the production of front-wheel-drive cars at the plant in Togliatti was not, although the development of those was started in 1971, simultaneously with the production of the basic model VAZ 2101. The project to create a model with a front-wheel drive was constantly pushed back, and as a result, more than 7 years took up design work.

The emergence of a new model of VAZ

In 1978, a prototype front-wheel drive car was created, and I must say, the model turned out to be modern, technically perfect. After the tests, the G8 machine was called the VAZ 2108 Samara and was recommended for serial production. However, the process of finalizing the nodes and mechanisms, together with the preparation of the documentation, took several more years. The car went to the series only in 1984, and on sale appeared a year later.

Compact hatchback

The compact three-door car "eight", the photo of which is placed on the page, attracted buyers with its ultra-modern design. The body type hatchback was designed in the style of some angularity, which gave the car a special charm, the exterior lines created the impression of impetuosity, and the salon seemed spacious and comfortable. The only drawback of the new model was the poorly designed landing in the back seat. It was necessary to manipulate the door and folding seats, which resulted in a narrow passage opening into which it was necessary to squeeze. However, this disadvantage was more than compensated by many advantages, and the machine "eight" Quickly became popular.

Engine

The power unit VAZ 2108 from the very beginning of production was in three versions, the engine volume of 1100 cube / cm was installed complete with a mechanical 4-speed gearbox, and the engines with a volume of 1500 and 1300 cube / cm were equipped with 5-step gearbox. Engine power was 54, 64 and 78 liters. from. respectively. Thus, the machine "eight" Was in high demand because of the choice. All engines of "Samara" were transverse, 4-cylinder, in-line, with the upper camshaft arrangement. Fuel injection in most of the produced "eights" was carburetor, and for export vehicles installed injection systems.

Chassis

The VAZ 2108 is a front and rear suspension, four shock absorbers and a braking system. The front suspension is soft, swinging (such as McPherson). The front end is equipped with two telescopic shock absorbers, complemented by a pair of spiral springs. The rear suspension is torsion-lever, equipped with double-acting shock absorbers and steel springs. In some cases, the "eight", a car tuned by the owner, demanded the reinforcement of the rear suspension, and then reinforced springs were put on the back.

The G8 brakes are combined, front disc, self-adjusting, rear drum type, also with automatic adjustment of the working gap of a pair of drum-shoe.
