On the way to directing

Meden Julio was born in Spain in the city of San Sebastian. The fascination with cinematography began in childhood. The boy experimented with light with the help of his father's amateur camera.

After receiving a doctor's diploma, Medem began to work in his specialty. However, after a few months, the young man realized that everyday communication with mentally ill people also affects his psyche. Then he decided to seriously study the cinema. In his opinion, cinema also treats people's souls, only more scale.

Professional activity

The way to the director's chair began for a talented guy with various jobs in this field. He was both an editor, an editor, and a screenwriter. In parallel, he continued to shoot.

In 1986, short films by Julio Medema were noticed by specialists, and the plot of "Paws on the head" was awarded the prize of an international festival held in Bilbao. Less than a year, as another short film "Exactly at six" was marked by a well-known Spanish television channel.

In 1991, the Medema scenario was approved for filming. As a result, a year later, Julio's debut film "The Cows" was released. The picture was highly rated by critics. Many were shocked by the wit and precision of the director, with whom he passed the story of two Bass families through the eyes of intelligent animals.

The painting immediately won the "Goya" award. Also she was awarded at the film festivals in Turin, Montreal and Tokyo.

A great movie

On the crest of success in 1993, there is another film - "Red Squirrel". Medea Julio does not deviate from his ideas and again uses animals for allegorical narratives. And again success! The picture was awarded with a lot of prizes, the main one being the prize in Cannes according to the version of the youth jury.

At this point in Hollywood, there were willing to work with Julio Medem. Stanley Kubrick recommended to invite the Spaniard to work on the project "Mask of Zorro." But the prospect of exchanging one's own vision of the world for Hollywood's "masterpieces" did not attract the director.

In the next picture "Earth" the main character is the Angel who comes to our world to purify him from evil. For this role, Julio Medem invited Antonio Banderas. But the actor could not come because of employment in Hollywood, and the director approved Carmelo Gomez.

The most significant works

1998 was marked by the appearance on the screen of the picture "Lovers of the Arctic Circle". This dramatic love story really touched the hearts of many spectators. The film received its well-deserved prizes and was bought for hire outside of Spain.

In 2001, Julio Medema had a grief - his sister Anna died in a car accident. Six years later, the picture "Restless Anna" on the life of a young artist appeared on the screens. The painting used the paintings of Sister Medema.

"Room in Rome" just won the jury of the festival of cinema in Malaga in 2010. The director himself was not particularly pleased. He claimed to have shot the film between action and boredom.

Medea Julio considers the most successful and difficult work of his work "Ma ma". This is the story of one woman - Magda, who, dying, gives her daughter's life from a beloved man.

The main role in the film was played by compatriot Medema - Penelope Cruz. She is also a producer and received the prize of the National Film Association of Spain in 2016.
