Sinusitis in the child: signs of the disease

Very often, viral and bacterial infections can provoke sinusitis in a child. Signs of the disease are the same as in ARI or ARVI: headache, nasal congestion, fever. Typically, the symptoms of viral and respiratory diseases occur on the 6-7th day. If after this time the child continues to be disturbed by the above signs, headaches started and a purulent discharge appeared from the nose, which means that the cold gave complication in the form of sinusitis. Sinusitis in children up to a year, and sometimes up to two or three years is not found, they usually get sick with rhinitis. This is due to the physiological characteristics of development. How to identify sinusitis in a child?

You should pay attention to the following symptoms:

  • Pain in the nose, which provokes a headache;

  • Temperature increase up to 39 ºС;

  • The child complains of weakness, lethargy, lack of appetite, sleep disturbance;

  • Edema of the eyelids and cheeks.

Usually, an acute sinusitis appears after an infectious disease, it can be an acute rhinitis or an adenoiditis.

Symptoms of acute sinusitis:

  • A protracted runny nose, in which the discharge from the nose acquires a yellow-green color and becomes a thick consistency;

  • The child has a severe headache, which is located in the region of the bridge of the nose (by the evening, pain usually intensifies, painkillers do not help);

  • Nasal congestion, which does not help vasoconstrictor drugs;

  • Hearing impairment and severe pain in the ears, which do not release after warming compresses;

  • Toothache in the absence of any problems with the teeth;

  • Increase in temperature, especially towards evening;

  • Moods, bad mood, lack of appetite, decreased activity in the child;

  • Snoring in a dream;

  • Photophobia and tearfulness;

  • Decreased taste sensations;

  • Swelling in the nose, cheeks and eyes.

If the acute sinusitis is not treated, then the child can develop chronic sinusitis. The symptoms in this case are the same as in the acute form, but may be less pronounced.

In young children, the general symptoms are more pronounced than the local ones. For a long time, the elevated body temperature persists. At the child the weight of a body is lost, he badly sleeps and without appetite eats, there is a cough, cervical lymphonoduses increase. Chronic sinusogenic intoxication develops.

In older children, signs of maxillary sinusitis are less pronounced, but they persist for a longer time. The child suffers from a long nasal congestion, headaches, a decrease in smell. With a purulent form of sinusitis, an unpleasant odor from the mouth and nose can occur.

Swelling of the brain, meningitis in a purulent form and other dangerous complications can provoke sinusitis in a child. The signs of the disease must be found on time and appropriate treatment started. Sinusitis is a very dangerous and unpredictable disease. To avoid it, you need to regularly harden and strengthen the child's body.
