Shunting locomotive: specifications and photos
The structure of Russian Railways, private access roads and companies need facilities capable of maneuvering operations within the station. For these and other functions shunting locomotives were created, which differ from the train by economy.
The purpose of shunting locomotives
A huge number of different diesel locomotives and electric locomotives run on the railway transport. Each of them has its own application, and, depending on their technical characteristics, they produce a certain type of work. Each station needs to rearrange the wagons from the road to the road, serve not on the public road, fulfill the norms for the delivery of local cargo. With these tasks, the shunting locomotive can easily handle. If large diesel locomotives of high power, such as 2TE116, T10MK, 3TE116U, are used to oversee the train trains, diesel locomotives ЧМЭ3, ТЭМ2, ТГМ are used for shunting operations where there is no need to move heavy-weight convoys. Shunting locomotives remain the main means of producing local work at the station. Bryansk produces good quality locomotives, which are used in the structure of Russian Railways.
History of creation
The most common shunting diesel locomotive in the USSR until 1964 was the ChME2. But due to insufficient capacity and subsequently non-fulfillment of the plan of the shunting work, it was decided to design new, more powerful locomotives of this series. The building was taken over by the Prague plant. In 1964, two experimental models of the ChME3 were released onto the rails, which passed all the tests perfectly. The diesel locomotive of this model, along with TEM2 and nowadays is the most common locomotive for the production of shunting work. Along with the "CKD Prague" plant "Sokolovo" produced locomotives T444 and T449, which due to limited coupling weight were not widely used. Shunting of shunting locomotives must be carried out by specially trained people.
Technical characteristics ЧМЭ3
The shunting locomotive ChME3 is equipped with a hood and an H-frame. Wheeled axles are equipped with one bearing. Suspension suspension of the locomotive is equipped with hydraulic shock absorbers. The locomotive is equipped with a six-cylinder four-stroke K6S310DK diesel engine, whose capacity is 1350 horsepower. The shaft rotation frequency is increased to 340-740 rpm, compared to the FME2. The diesel generator drives the generator from the battery. The diesel has a considerable weight, which is 13 tons, diesel generator TD-802 weighs 20 tons.
CHME3 indicators
- The weight of the construction is -114 t.
- The weight of the equipped locomotive is -123 t.
- The fuel reserve is 5000 kg.
- Oil reserve - 500 liters
- Stock of water - 1100 liters
- The stock of sand is 1500 kg.
- The maximum speed is 95 km / h.
- The minimum radius of the curves is 80 m.
Technical characteristics of shunting locomotives of TEM series
Diesel locomotives of the TEM1 and TEM2 series are widely used throughout the railway network. They have economy, reliability, good power. Bryansk Engineering Plant recently produced a test model TEM2M, which already has a four-stroke diesel 6D49, as well as a more sophisticated cooling system.
No means can cope with the local work of the station, as a shunting locomotive. Photo TEM 2 illustrates the appearance of the locomotive. It can run on curved sections of the path with a radius of up to 80 meters. Full supply of fuel, oil and sand will ensure trouble-free operation for up to 10 days.
TEM2 is equipped with a diesel engine PD1M with the claimed power of 880 kW, in which the speed of rotation of the crankshaft is increased, the air pressure is increased to 0.155 MPa. The PD1M uses a turbocharger, which is activated due to exhaust gases. Air purification for the turbocharger takes place by rotating the air cleaner, mounted on the right side of the locomotive. But for air cooling , a ribbed tubular cooler is used, which functions by means of a water circuit. To cool the traction motors, a centrifugal fan is used. Just behind the place for the driver is a battery compartment. On the roof of the locomotive there are hatch-type hatches for supplying with sand. The diesel locomotive shunting TEM 2 is capable of rearranging large wagons from the way to the road.
To ensure a favorable temperature in the operator's cabin, the heater is used, and also the foot heaters in the right and left side of the cab directly at the workplaces of the people serving the locomotive. Due to good thermal insulation of the cabin, TEM 2 can be used at low temperatures. The control panel is equipped with safety devices, a speedometer SL-2M, a crane operator for dialing or dropping positions, radio communication, control devices, typhon control buttons and a pedal for feeding sand under the front and rear carts.
The diesel locomotives of the TEM series have additional equipment that allows the machinist to work alone, that is, without an assistant. To do this, the equipment is equipped with a portable control device.
For cooling water and oil on the body of the locomotive, shutters are provided. The fuel is heated by means of hot water, which comes from the working diesel. Since the body of the hood type, to all equipment of the locomotive is free access.
The driver's cab is raised above the frame, which gives a good overview. To ensure timely combat against fire and safety, the locomotive is equipped with two fire extinguishers. The driver of the shunting locomotive must have the skills to manage and have the appropriate education.

Technical characteristics of diesel locomotives of TGM series
Shunting locomotive TGM serves for shunting work at the station and private driveways.
TGM-4B is equipped with diesel 6CHN21-21 with gas turbo. The frequency of rotation, like many competitive models, is 1200 rpm, has 2 modes: shunting and train. The train operation mode allows to run within several stations, and the train is designed to perform the assigned tasks within the station.
As for running qualities, the shunting locomotive is equipped with a spring suspension mounted on two-axle trolleys. Good dynamic qualities soften the load and allow good entry into small-radius curves. The locomotive is equipped with a manual mechanical brake. The body of the diesel locomotive is made with the use of hatches and folding hoods to ensure easy access to important parts of the unit.
Inside the cabin is equipped with lamps, signaling the location of the driver, who can operate the machine on both sides. Managing a shunting locomotive is done alone, ie an assistant is not required. The cabin has good noise-absorbing qualities. The securely made fastenings of the housing with the frame drown out any kind of vibration. A thermal insulation materials used in the manufacture of the body, contribute to the operation of the locomotive at low temperatures. New shunting locomotives have significant differences in comparison with their predecessors.
Quality guarantee for the repair of shunting locomotives
- Disassemble and assemble the shunting locomotive is necessary with strict observance of the technical documentation.
- It will require specialized, expensive equipment.
- Availability of all necessary spare parts and parts.
- Work should be carried out by highly qualified specialists.
- Before starting the repair, it is necessary to develop several production options.
