Bus of small class PAZ-652: technical characteristics. Pasik bus

In 1955, at the Pavlovsk Automobile Plant. Zhdanov began to work in the design and experimental department, led by the creator of the famous "Victory" Yu. N. Sorochkin, who had moved from the GAZ plant. It was this department, a year after its appearance, developed the PAZ-652 bus, which in its design was different from the traditional models of that time.

How it all began

It so happened that in the domestic automobile industry the chassis of the trucks was used as the base for the bus chassis. This is what predetermined the further layout of the body of the future bus, virtually eliminating the possibility of further development of the industry. At the same time, all specialists involved in the development of new models understood perfectly well that a truck and a bus are different techniques that have different purposes. Therefore, the construction of the chassis of the truck was not exactly suitable for a bus. Pavlovtsy decided to move away from the established tradition and create their own small bus, with a wagon configuration and a different design.

Basis of construction

First of all, in the new model, the designers changed the main thing: if earlier the bus base was made up of a cargo chassis to which his body was attached, then the body itself had to play the role of a bearing system. It was a frame structure with the necessary nodes and mechanisms built into it.

A well-proven cargo GAZ-51A served as a donor for filling the future of the PAZ-652.

The body frame, like the frame, was made of steel with a sheet thickness of 0.9 mm. A bunch of all elements and key components of the design was carried out by spot welding. This allowed to reduce the overall weight of the carcass while maintaining the necessary strength and load-bearing capacity.

Glazing "Pasika"

Bus PAZ-652 received glazing, which visually gave the overall ease of the entire structure. The windshield was quite large, with a curved shape, providing a good view of the driver, both in line of sight and through the side mirrors. What could not be said about the old "pazik", the bus of the 651th model.

The windows of the interior designers were equipped with opening windows, which was an important addition, especially in hot weather. The roof also did not do without glazing. Tinted glass, mounted in its slopes, made the design of the PAZ-652 quite attractive for that time. However, it was these glasses that could spoil the appearance of the bus in case of damage. The fact is that they were a three-layer structure, the so-called "triplex". The advantage of this glass was that when it hit it it did not break, but at the same time it was covered with light cracks, which were not beautifully displayed on the dark background of toning.

All the rest of the glazing of the salon was performed by "Stalinites" - glass, which was specially hardened. Its peculiarity consisted in the fact that it could withstand the impact even with a hammer, but if it was still broken, it fell apart with small cubes without sharp edges, excluding the possibility of traumatizing people. Thus, the PAZ-652 worked an additional driver and passenger safety factor.

Salon of the bus

The first thing that designers did was to demarcate space, as if separating the technical part together with the driver's seat from the passenger compartment. To do this, a sheet of Plexiglas was installed on the cross duct, located behind the back of the driver's seat.

The bus also provided two side seats specially designed for the conductor, as indicated by a sign attached to the wall above the seat.

The interior walls were faced with plastic or fiberboard with a treated face. This favorably distinguished him from the old model of "pasika", which was internally lined with ordinary cardboard. Cardboard eventually began to warp, crack, crack, and eventually fell away.

The bus was supposed to be used for transportation of both seated and standing passengers. For the latter around the perimeter of the cabin, handrails attached to the ceiling were provided.

For boarding and disembarking people on the bus, there were two curtain doors on the starboard side, equipped with a vacuum control drive.

A few more features

In the new "pazika" there was one point that did not fit into the usual framework of the automotive industry. Designers installed a cooling radiator is not traditionally in front of the engine, but on the side of it. At the same time, it became possible to combine the fan casing with the bus air duct system using a special canvas cover. Thanks to this during the operation of the bus in winter, warm air, diverted from the engine, was transported directly to the salon. At other times, the cover was folded and fit into the radiator compartment.

The engine itself was placed in the passenger compartment to the right of the driver, in a special opening engine compartment. The walls of the compartment were laid with a layer of thermal insulation, and the top cover was lined with dermatome. Thus, the driver got access to the engine directly from the cabin of the bus.

The braking system was equipped with a vacuum amplifier, and shock absorbers were added to the springs in the suspension.

As for lighting, here, in addition to the elements from the GAZ-51A, devices from the Victory were also used. Plus to them, behind the bus added retroreflectors (cataphores).

Start of production and first modifications

The first tests of the experimental bus began in 1956, in the same year, an order was signed to start preparations for the mass production of new cars. Four years later, in 1960, the first serial "pasik" came off the assembly line of the plant.

The bus, in addition to the main version, had two more modifications: 652B and 652T.

Modified "pazik" 652B differed from the reference model slightly modified body structure and design of the front of the machine.

Another modification, PAZ-652 T (tourist), was produced with additional amenities in the cabin and one door for passengers.

For all 10 years of serial production 62,121 buses have left the assembly line of the plant. Throughout the production process, the PA has been refined: modifications, various amendments were made to its design, the shortcomings revealed during the operation of the machines were eliminated. But in general, the bus coped well with its functions, which is why it lasted so much time in the series.
