Sevastopol is one of the few cities in the world with a heroic history, which is fully reflected in the annals, museum exhibits, memorials and monuments. Centuries-old evolution of the Crimean peninsula is inextricably linked with Sevastopol and its protected part of Tauric Chersonesos. Numerous guests visiting Sevastopol, the sights of the hero city are of great interest. Sevastopol had to go through several wars: the Crimean War of 1855, the assault of German invaders in 1941-42, and the bloody Crimean operation of 1944. In addition to fierce fighting on land, Sevastopol took part in sea battles, which were conducted under the command of Admiral Kornilov. After the defeat of the Russian fleet near Evpatoria, the surviving sailors led by Kornilov took part in the battles on Malakhov Hill, where Admiral Kornilov died heroically, dividing the fate of Admiral Nakhimov, who also lost his head in July 1855 on the Malakhov Mound.
The heroic past of the city of Sevastopol, wartime landmarks gave rise to several city symbols. One of them is the "Monument to the Scuttled Ships". The monument is considered the emblem of the hero city, it is installed in the sea on the traverse of Primorsky Boulevard. It was created in 1905, to the 50th anniversary of the Defense of Sevastopol. During the Crimean War, in 1855, by the order of Admiral Kornilov, about twenty Russian ships were flooded, which thus blocked the ships of the enemy entry to Sevastopol Bay. The monument to the flooded ships is marked on the coat of arms of Sevastopol and is an unbreakable symbol of the whole life of the hero city.
A symbol of the historical past of Sevastopol is the Cathedral of St. Vladimir. This temple has its own history. Originally, it was planned to build a cathedral in honor of Grand Duke Vladimir on the ruins of Chersonesos, where the prince once received baptism. Admiral Lazarev, who also participated in the choice of a place for the cathedral, proposed to build a church in the center of Sevastopol, since in the distance the cathedral would not be visited by people. His proposal was accepted and preparations for construction began. Lazarev soon died and it was decided to bury his remains at the site of the future cathedral. Thus, the crypt of the admiral was arranged in the foundation of the temple. Subsequently, the Vladimir Cathedral as a tomb took the ashes of the admirals Kornilov, Istomin and Nakhimov. At the cathedral there is a plaque with the names of four heroes.
The most peaceful sight of Sevastopol is the ruins of the legendary Tauric Chersonesos. Since its founding, Chersonesos has existed for a long time, almost two thousand years. When the excavation of the ancient city began, it immediately found so many archaeological rarities that they were enough for a whole museum, which is now successfully taking visitors. Everything in the museum is genuine, exhibits from the millennial past can be touched. Sevastopol, Chersonese, Cape Fiolent, Panorama, Sapun-gora - this is not the whole list of attractions.
The events of the Crimean War today are presented in the unique memorial complex "Panorama", which is located on the historic boulevard of Sevastopol. In a huge building like "rotunda" a panoramic picture "The Defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855" was mounted. The picturesque canvas tells of the battles of one day on June 18, 1855 and has a length of 114 meters and a height of 14 meters. The visitors of the memorial gradually feel that they are on the Malakhov mound, directly in the thick of the fighting.
