School psychologist and work with gifted children

There is an erroneous opinion that the main efforts of school psychologists should be directed at students with deviant behavior. At the same time, it is forgotten that working with gifted children is also a leading activity. If the family needs to see the ability of the child in time, then the school needs to support them, develop them, and also prepare the necessary ground for implementation in the future.

In everyday life, giftedness is considered a synonym for talent, in psychology the definition of this concept is slightly different. This is the quality of the individual, expressed in the successful development of any type of activity, while combined with interest in them. Whether such a child will grow up to be a genius, a talented person depends on a lot, including on how well thought out the work with gifted children in school.

First, you need to identify these guys. There are students who are immediately distinguished against the background of their peers. In such cases, usually, the teacher turns to the psychologist for help. Sometimes, according to the results of standard methods of planning, he finds them himself. In any case, for the diagnosis enough classic tests (for example, Eysenck, Amthauer, etc.). Further, a more detailed study of the personal characteristics and characteristics of such schoolchildren is needed.

Ideal option is considered when working with gifted children in primary school. The sooner it starts, the more likely it is to get positive results faster. Stimulation of the creative abilities of these children is conducted both in the classroom and in after-hours activities. It is desirable to involve them in various circles and sections that are close to their interests.

If in the classroom work with gifted children is usually conducted by a teacher, then the psychologist, as well as the class teacher, has the responsibility for everything else. It must be remembered that these students have a number of problems related to their adaptation to the team and to the school in general. For example, in most cases, they are not interested in games of peers, which they have long outgrown, hence the isolation and position of the "outcast" may appear. They often differ in non-standard solutions and the reluctance to obey the generally accepted norms. In connection with the internal need for excellence, many gifted students have low self-esteem and a sense of dissatisfaction.

In time to recognize and correct these and other problems - this is one of the tasks set before the school psychologist. Also, working with gifted children should include talks and seminars with their teachers. Often teachers are afraid and avoid such students, since they can ask the original question, which puzzles, besides, they require a lot of attention. The teacher should prepare for employment with these schoolboys especially carefully, without fail selecting additional material. Goodwill and understanding of the psychological characteristics of this group of students is one of the basic principles that a teacher must adhere to.

An important point is to motivate the child to learn, which is quite difficult. Psychologists are advised to diagnose the abilities of these children quite often in order to track dynamics. In addition, it is worthwhile to conduct and study their personal characteristics, as well as motivation. If necessary, individual consultations or corrective sessions are held.

It should be noted that a well-organized work with gifted children will make it possible to win winners of competitions and competitions of various levels, as well as a versatile talented personality, whose success was to a small extent promoted by the school psychologist.
