Pyroplasmosis of dogs - simpotomy, treatment, prevention

Pyroplasmosis ... Almost everyone who has started a dog now faces this disease. The disease is so dangerous that the dog, after a few days, or even hours after infection, dies. Although if the treatment is started on time, then the salvation of the pet will be a great chance. Pyroplasmosis of dogs (another, less common name - babesiosis) can be chronic, and can be acute. Any dog can get infected, regardless of sex and age. There is an opinion that the disease is seasonal, but from my experience I can affirm with all responsibility: infection is possible at any time of the year, even in winter, at minus temperature.

Dogs with a weak immune system signal a few hours after infection, dogs are stronger - a day or more later.

Pyroplasmosis. Symptoms.

I will try to tell not only about the symptoms, but also about the course of the disease. The dog, as you know, becomes infected after the tick is bitten. Actually, he is a carrier of babesia, living and reproducing in the blood. This is how the pyroplasmosis of dogs begins. The first one becomes infected with blood. Babesia begins to multiply and destroy red blood cells. Erythrocytes carry oxygen through the body. Their shortage causes the dog to have shortness of breath. The dog becomes tired and lethargic. In most cases, there is a rejection of food, even the most delicious and loved before. The temperature rises. The destruction of red blood cells causes anemia. That is why the mucous membranes become pale, even cyanotic. Disintegration of erythrocytes and the products of the life activity of babesia adversely affect the spleen, liver, and kidneys. The organs that are responsible for cleansing toxins are no longer able to cope with the work and, after a while, the whites of the eyes turn yellow, the color of urine changes (from coffee to reddish-brown).

Fragments of erythrocytes, which are already destroyed, enter the kidneys, clog the tubules, causing kidney failure. Cardiovascular and respiratory systems start to work in emergency mode. The pulmonary edema and hypoxia of the brain, paralysis can begin. The consequences are irreversible.

Pyroplasmosis of dogs is a serious disease and, in the absence of treatment, almost always (with rare exception) causes the death of the animal. The incubation period is from a day to three weeks. Immunity is not produced.

The current is super-fast, in the language of dog breeders "lightning fast": the temperature is up to 41 degrees, the rejection of any food, shortness of breath, apathy and severe fatigue, urine with an admixture of blood (brown or coffee color), vomiting is possible, the mucous membranes turn yellow, the whites of the eyes yellow. The animal dies on the second or third day. It is important to know that the temperature can "jump" at the initial stage of the disease, for a short time. Therefore, the absence of heat does not guarantee that the dog has another disease.

The course is chronic (the form is very rare): the temperature rises, then normalizes. Appetite worsens, general lethargy and apathy. The animal is depressed. The states of "improvement-deterioration" are replaced.

Pyroplasmosis in dogs. Treatment.

If the symptoms described above are similar to your dog's symptoms, it's urgent to go to the clinic, even if the tick is not found! You should consider what the tick can bite and fall away.

The first thing to do is analyze. Insist that the blood is taken from the ear (or finger). Blood from the veins at the initial stage of the disease is useless to take, the babesia in it will be found even during rapid development, and you will lose precious hours and take away the chances of saving the dog. The analysis must be done even if the clinic is not yet clearly marked. Agree, it's better to be safe ...

Treatment will appoint a doctor. Councils for treatment, which will be given here, can be used in extreme, emergency cases (if there is no opportunity to see a doctor). I base myself on my experience, but I strongly ask: go to the clinic !!!

1) in order to destroy the pathogen, a single injection of one of the preparations is made (sometimes with a repetition a day later): veriben, beryllium, azidine (I prefer the last of the named ones) per kilo of weight 0.015 g intramuscularly;

2) symptomatic treatment to maintain the dog: furosemide (diuretic), camphor (for the heart, subcutaneously), karsil (will support the liver, according to the instructions), immunophane (or ribontane, to increase resistance, the cube intramuscularly, three days in a row), katozal To improve metabolism, a cube intramuscularly a week), a complex of "vitamins + minerals."

3) nutrition in small doses, easily assimilated, dietary.

Treatment does not end here! Again, pyroplasmosis of dogs is a very dangerous disease with a fatal outcome in most cases, so treatment in the clinic is necessary for the good of your dog. Further treatment will be adjusted by the veterinarian.

And finally: do not spare money to protect the dog from ticks and fleas. The best drugs to date are Front Line and Advantix. Special collars are in addition to the main treatment and the use of them without the mentioned drugs is meaningless.
