Peruvian Inca Orchid: Description, Characteristics and Care

This unusual little dog, bearing such a rare and beautiful name, is still an exotic creature for many professional dog handlers, not to mention dog lovers.

Peruvian orchid of the Incas is unusual in everything: appearance, behavioral characteristics, physiology. And today we will introduce you to this amazing and quite pretty dog.

History of the breed

Peruvian orchid of the Incas is an ancient and very rare breed. Experts in the history of dog breeding claim that it was bred in 750 AD in Peru. This dog, possessing an excellent hunting instinct, was very appreciated by the Incas.

It should be clarified that the breed has two varieties - naked and with short hair. As pets in the homes of the Indians lived a naked dog, and covered with wool was used for hunting. In its homeland, it is called "Peruvian naked dog." The Peruvian Inca orchid is its European name.

Intrigued in Peru, Spanish conquistadors drew attention to unusual animals, and this was a tragic event in the history of the breed. Attention Spaniards led to a huge loss of the number of these unique animals. Fortunately, over time, a wonderful dog - the Peruvian Inca orchid - recovered in numbers and was recognized as the first aboriginal dog of the American continent. The inhabitants of Peru were sure that this animal with an unusual appearance is capable of curing various diseases.

Peruvian orchid of Inca: description of the breed

We have already said that this breed is divided into two subspecies: completely bald and covered with wool. The standard allows the bald dog to have a short fur on his legs, head, and also at the tip of his tail. Now the Peruvian orchid of the Incas, even at home, is not very common.

It is interesting that the members of this breed have an incomplete set of teeth, but this in no way affects the health of the animal. Her closest relatives with wool do not suffer from a lack of teeth - they have a full set.

Another amazing feature of the breed is the susceptibility of the animal's skin to temperature changes. For example, in winter, the dog's skin becomes lighter, and in the summer it becomes pinkish.

The Peruvian Inca orchid, unlike most dogs, sweats not with the tongue, but with the body. As a person, then the entire body is covered with sweat. These unusual pets are nocturnal hunters. By the evening they are active, and at night they almost never sleep.

External Features

All "peruvians" are divided into three categories, which differ in their height and weight:

  • Mini. Height - up to 40 cm; Weight - up to 8 kg.
  • Midi. Height - up to 50 cm; Weight - up to 12 kg.
  • Maxi. Height - 65 cm; Weight - 25 kg.

A slender, elegant dog with long legs will never go unnoticed. All lovers of animals pay attention to it. Her head is a bit like a wolf, with a wedge-shaped skull. Dark eyes have an almond shape. Ears are standing (when the animal is alert), wide. At rest they are laid back.

"Peruvian" has a rather deep chest and muscular slender legs. The tail of the dog is low set, of medium length. Peruvian orchid of the Incas can have a different color - dark brown, black, graphite, bluish or quite light. The average life expectancy is about 13 years.

Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault. Its severity is determined by experts, depending on how strongly it is expressed. In addition, there are defects that are not discussed, they lead to an unconditional disqualification:

  • malocclusion;
  • Not conforming to the standard tail and ears;
  • Wool cover exceeding permissible standards;
  • albinism.

Character

The Peruvian orchid of the Incas is oriented towards life with man. The peculiarity of this breed is also in the fact that each of its representatives is absolutely unique, each animal has an individual character that can radically differ from that of its fellow-species. This causes difficulties in drawing up a common "portrait" of the breed.

To a man, "Peruvian" is attached, but his feelings for him are rather restrained. It requires early socialization, which will avoid many problems associated with treating children and strangers.

This animal can be called the quietest dog in the world. She is friendly, patient and unruffled. "Peruvians" are kind, adore attention to themselves, the owner is greeted with a loud barking, thus expressing a great joy from the meeting.

The naked Peruvian dog is smart and intelligent, so there is no problem with her training. Great results can be achieved if the training will be built on a game with reinforcement of treats.

Peruvian orchid orchids: maintenance and care

This dog will not suit an inexperienced dog breeder. As you already understood, the Peruvian orchid of the Incas needs special care. Proper care for this animal must first of all be based on its natural life rhythm. All classes, training should be transferred to the evening, when the animal experiences the greatest rush of activity.

This dog will not tolerate a rude attitude. The best option for its maintenance is an apartment or a house, because it can not be in the yard. The most vulnerable place of "Peruvian" is the skin, which needs special care. In winter, your pet on a walk should be dressed in overalls so that he does not feel all the "charms" of frosty air, and in summer it must be protected from the scorching sun. The delicate skin of your pet should be lubricated with sunscreen if you are going for a walk on a hot, sunny day. And after bathing it must be moistened with oils.

Hygienic procedures

A naked dog needs regular examination of teeth, with which it may have problems, as well as cleaning the ears and washing the eyes with strong tea. Provide proper care to your pet, and in response to your care, he will be attached to you and will please you with his presence.

Content in a private home

This cute dog from Peru is ideal for keeping in an apartment - it will be arranged by two short walks a day, on which the animal should not be released from the leash. If you have your own yard, then it is desirable that it had a shady place, where Peruvian can rest and not be burned.

As you can see, the Peruvian Inca orchid is a very interesting breed. In Russia, it is almost not, but we hope that in the very near future these dogs will please Russian animal lovers.
