Permogory painting: from the beginning to the present day

In the distant past painting of utensils and various household items was the most popular craft. Colorful drawings adorned things literally in every house and it is noteworthy that the simple peasants showed the stunning beauty of the patterns. In the creation of their small paintings, people put their whole soul, which is probably why old drawings admire their picturesqueness even today.

Permogory painting, originated in the 18th century, is one of the simplest, but at the same time, the most beautiful kinds of folk art. From the pier "Permogorye", located on the highest bank of the Northern Dvina, offers a breathtaking view of green fields with golden flowers, majestic tree crowns and mirror surfaces of reservoirs. Particularly beautiful is the northern nature during sunsets and sunrises, when the whole sky is flooded with crimson paints. It is these natural colors in ancient times inspired the masters to create a vivid painting, now called in honor of the meta of its birth.

Permogorskaya painting is based on several motives, the most important of them is a floral pattern symbolizing well-being and happiness. Most often, the artists depicted spreading trees, on the branches of which were adorned sweet-maiden birds-the Sirins. Another common element of the Severodvinsk drawings is scenes from the life of peasants. This could be a girl's party, family tea or, for example, sleigh rides.

The main colors of this type of painting were red, black, green and white, sometimes in addition the masters used golden tones. Before the work began, the wooden object was primed with glue and chalk, then covered with whitewash (which they subsequently were the background). After the white paint dried up, a black contour of the pattern was taken out with a feather or goose feather. Then the drawing was filled with bright colors and in conclusion covered with all linseed oil.

Permogorskaya painting was most often present on wooden objects of everyday life, such as spinning wheels, cradles, boxes for bread, tueski, dishes, children's toys. The painted utensils were inherited from generation to generation, thanks to this, some products have survived to this day.

Today the Permogorsk painting acquires a second life: the masters decorate her household utensils and create separate, independent pictures. Dishes with folk patterns became not only a decoration of the table, but also an element of decor. Especially popular is the painting of plates - the picturesque saucers bring a unique flavor to the home interior

If you want to master the technique of this kind of folk art, everyone can. To create a picturesque pattern, it's enough to just practice a little on paper or use a ready-made stencil at all.

To create a pattern on the dishes you will need special indelible paints (stained glass or acrylic), several brushes and some free time. It should be noted that although the colors are waterproof, they should not touch foodstuffs. Therefore, if the dishes are intended for food, and not for decoration, it is better to display patterns on the outside of it.

Beginners are encouraged to master the technique of painting in one stroke. This method of drawing is based on a color stretch: the lighter tones gradually go into the dark ones and, conversely, vice versa. Thanks to this effect, even the most unpretentious drawings turn out to be "alive".

Painting with a single brushstroke is very simple: a wide flat brush is completely dipped in the paint of the base color, and then its edges are immersed in shade tones. When applying such a smear, the main shade turns out to be dominant, and additional colors, merging with the main one, form a smooth transition from one color to another.
