"People on the swamp": a summary of the chapters

The novel by Ivan Melezh "People in the Swamp" (a summary will be presented below) is the most famous creation of the writer. Translated into many languages of the world, the work reliably narrates about the village life in the Soviet era.

A little about the author

Ivan Pavlovich Melezh is a famous Soviet writer, laureate of many literary awards and a member of the Writers' Union. It was published mainly in the Belarusian language. The first works began to appear in print since 1939.

Melezh appealed to the depiction of the Great Patriotic War, the postwar years, the description of village life of the 1920s and 1930s. Many of his works are autobiographical, the writer is very realistic and depicts Soviet reality in detail.

In the center of the narrative are Vasily Dyatlov and Anna Chernushka. And the work itself is the story of their life and unsuccessful love.

"People in the swamp": a summary in parts. Part one

In the marshes stands the village of Kureni, practically cut off from the world. The main character Vasili goes to the first in his life haymaking. On the road, his family's cart is catching up with the neighbors' cart - Chernushkov, the boy decides to overtake them, but the cart breaks, and they come to the meadow later than everyone else. At night Vasily remains in the field with Anya and Hvedka Chernushkas.

Anna this summer did not know the end of the boyfriends, although many were afraid of her keen language. Every evening, as soon as it gets dark, Vasily ran to the fence of the Chernushki house, where Anna was waiting. In one of these evenings the peasants came up to them with cut-offs and asked where the house of Akhrem Gribka was. The local activist did nothing, only was frightened, but Vaska was arrested the next morning.

Upset Anna went to her friend to share her grief, but that house was not there, but on the way back she met local youth and went with the guys. On the get-togethers the girl quarrels with Efim Glushakov, the son of a rich man.

The next day, Anna and her sister Hadoska work at the Glushakovs. For two days Yefim did not take his eyes off Anna, but the girl gives him a rebuff. Then the angry Glushakov climbs to Hadoska. A girl in love with him gives herself up for her promise to marry.

The novel "People in the Swamp" is rich in events and realistic. The summary in Russian of its first part can be completed as follows. Vasily did not stay in prison for long, his fellow villager Kostik helped him free himself. On the way home, the young man hears the voices of Anna and Yefim. Jealousy and resentment flare up in him.

Part two

Nikanor has a meeting of the Kuren people, they want to drain the swamps, but in the end they come to a decision to build a dam. Anna also comes to the meeting. The girl does not look at Basil. On the way home, he catches up with Anna, but Yefim immediately joins them. Vasily realizes that he is superfluous.

The events described in the novel "People in the Swamp" are vivid and understandable, the summary only confirms this. Christmas is approaching. Nikanor, who was appointed responsible for the construction of the dam, is preparing for the task. Families from a neighboring village come to visit. Young people are walking on the street. Gradually between the visitors and the local quarrels begin to break out, which turn into fights.

After the holidays Nikanor gathers the Kuren people to build a dam. Himself begins to dig a ditch. Until the haymaking people worked hard, but then everything stalled.

In August harvesting began. Anna worked first with her stepmother, and then went to the woods for berries. The girl saw Yefim and followed him. But Hadoska ran up to him, rushed to her neck and announced that she was pregnant. The guy replied that it was not from him and that it was generally better to go to the witch doctor in Glinishchi.

Having thrown Hodoska out of her head with foolishness, Yefim went into the forest. In the clearing he found Anna picking berries. The guy put his arm around her, kissed her, but the girl broke free again, having hit the offender on the nose.

Rumors about Yefim and Anna began to circulate in the village. The girl's father, hearing the conversations, went to her, but she replied that there was nothing. Chernushka calmed down. However, Basil believed the rumors and, meeting Anna, called her. In response, the offended girl said that they had everything by agreement with Efim.

Glushakovs are sent to Chernushka matchmakers. Yefim insists on the imminent wedding. On the street Anna sees a passing Vasily, wants to make up, but does not dare. Vasily also has a hard time, but he believes that even without his wife will be able to prove himself, to become a good master.

Part Three

To the smallest detail reflected the village life of Melezh in his novel "People in the Swamp." The summary of the chapters of the work helps to approach the world of Polesie people, to understand their experiences, hopes and sorrows.

Chernushki go to the fair to collect the right amount for the wedding. Trade is not going well, but Larivon and Yefim are helping Anna. Then they go to dinner together. The redistribution of the land begins in the village. Glushaku does not like it very much. At the meeting there were those who are dissatisfied with the counting of the commission: many found extra land.

The next morning, Vasily decides to plow a piece of Glushakov's land, which was considered superfluous. He took the horse and began to work. Soon Efim noticed him, the guys started a fight. The gathered people barely managed to pull them apart. The next morning, Basil's mother finds a black cross on the door of the house and asks her son to be more careful.

Hadoska again lies in wait for Yefim. She is in tears and wishes the boy in the next world the same torment as she is through his fault on this. He says that he will no longer approach Yefim, and he will never see her.

Wedding

The wedding begins, the bridegroom redeems the bride, and everyone goes to church, where the wedding takes place. They return home, the feast begins, Anna's father gives Yefim a meager gift - trousers. Young people go to the house to the groom, Glushakovs are not particularly happy about the wedding, but the party continues.

After the wedding fuss subsided, at dawn, the mother-in-law awakens Anna and sends her to take care of the cattle.

The end of the novel

The dam is being rebuilt. And on Sunday, on this occasion, they organized a rally. Vasily tried to find Anna in the crowd, but found only Yefim. The rally ends, and Vasily, along with Honey and Nikanor returns home. On the way, the conversation turns to Anna. Vasily with incredible pain and longing speaks of a lost girl.
