Verkhovene withdrew his first full-length film "The Case Is a Business" in 1971. This picture is not very popular. However, two years later the novice director made a film that won both recognition of critics and commercial success, the drama "Turkish Delights". In the picture there are a lot of frank scenes, for which she received a hard age rating. But this did not prevent the "Turkish Delights" from deserving the Oscar nomination.

None of the films over which Verhoven worked for the next 12 years, did not manage to win worldwide fame. The next notable project in the director's career is the historical drama "Flesh + Blood", over which Gereard Sutean and Paul Verhoeven worked together. The director's filmography was supplemented by another very naturalistic film. Frank scenes brought the picture a tough rating - X, which did not allow it to recoup even its small budget. However, critics took the new project of an extraordinary director for "Hurray" and awarded the film the status of a cult.

Work in Hollywood

A year later, Paul Verhoeven moved to Hollywood and immediately decided to try himself in a new genre. His first American project was a fantastic action movie "Robocop". The film again received a tough age rating, but the box office exceeded the budget fourfold. When the picture won the "Oscar", one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood was Paul Verhoeven. The filmography of the director soon replenished with another fantastic action movie - "Remember All". This picture also won an Oscar and raised more than $ 250 million at the box office.

In 1992, Paul Verhoeven shot one of the most famous erotic thrillers in the history of cinema - "Basic Instinct." Critics took the picture ambiguously, but the audience appreciated it very highly. And it's not surprising, because a strong cast, a non-trivial storyline and beautiful erotic scenes made the film very attractive.

The first failure

Not all subsequent projects of the director received world recognition. The loudest failure in the career of Verkhovena was the movie "Shougerles", which critics, for various reasons, smashed to the nines. There was a disgusting actor's play, an unsuccessful soundtrack, and a bad direction. "Golden Raspberry" as the worst director in 1995 was Paul Verhoeven. Paul's filmography was replenished with the first unsuccessful project, and among his awards appeared "Golden Raspberry" (more precisely, not even one). The director took this failure with humor and personally climbed to the stage for all the assigned antinograds.

A few years later, critics rehabilitated the "Shougerles." Like many of Verkhovyn's films, he acquired the status of a cult film not for everyone.
