Onon - the Transbaikalian River

The Onon River of the Trans-Baikal Region is one of the most interesting rivers in Russia. It is distinguished by the severe nature and abundance of a variety of fish. But before going on fishing, all lovers of fishing should familiarize themselves with the current restrictions.

River characteristics

Onon is one of the largest rivers in the Amur basin. The upper part of the riverbed is in Mongolia. Further, it flows through the territory of Russia (Chita region). The total length of the channel is about 1000 km, of which about 300 km belong to Mongolia. The average river width is 100 m, the depth is up to 3.5 m. The total area of the basin is 96 200 km 2 . The largest tributaries are the Borzya, Unda, Khura-Gol, Kira, Ilya, Aga and Agutsa rivers.

It is located in the Kentei-Khan mountains of Mongolia, the source of the Onon River. This place is considered the birthplace of the famous Mongolian conqueror Genghis Khan. In the same area, he allegedly was buried. You can get to the source by traveling on a horse. In the cold season the river carries thawed snow water, and in the warm season it has mainly rain water. Transparency of water is quite low. The maximum run-off is in July and August, when floods are possible. The largest spills were observed in 1988 and 1998. They had the nature of floods.

Natural conditions

It refers to the zone of sharply continental climate the Onon River. Transbaikalia (eastern part) for the severity and dryness of winter is close to Yakutia. Characteristic for the climate are low temperatures in winter and a large diurnal temperature drop in summer. In November, the river is frozen. The ice cover is already breaking in May.

The area on which Onon (the river) flows, shallow and severe. On the sides of the river bed are low mountains and hills, composed of granite, porphyry and slates, they are mostly treeless or small-leaved. Areas of continuous forests are near the riverbed. Among the most interesting representatives of the flora is the Dahurian alpine rose and prunes. In the riverbed, you can find shoals and islands.

Economic and recreational use

Onon is a river that is suitable for alloys and fishing. The local population uses the water of the river mainly for irrigation of agricultural land. Along the right bank there is a reserve "Tsasucheysky Bor", which is a branch of the Daursky Reserve.

On the bank of the river. Onon discovered a deposit of tin, which is considered to be the only deposit on the territory of Russia.

Onon is a river in which people are dangerous to swim. Its current is fast, there are a large number of large stones at the bottom, many have sharp protrusions. There are many whirlpools that can be barely visible from the surface. In the summer, the river becomes particularly turbulent, floods often occur. All this was reflected in the special attitude of local residents to the reservoir.

A fish

Onon is a river that has large reserves of diverse freshwater fish. Here are found trout, grayling, taimen, pike, catfish, burbot, minnow, char, buckthorn, carp, crucian, crucible, horse, raspberry and other species. There are even cancers.

If the river were more abundant, it could become the habitat of such a unique fish as the beluga. However, the water level in the river tends to decrease, so the chances of finding this fish are now minimal. And before, she had met only once in 45 years. The size of the beluga can reach 5-6 m. The largest caught in the river. Onon the individual was 5 m long. This happened before the Great Patriotic War. Then they tried to transport the fish on the tractor, but it did not fit in the body and dragged along the ground.

Mongolian Taimen on the Onon River has a length of 70-100 cm, the largest specimens reach 120-130 cm, and the record - 210 cm. The size of the local trout is from 40 to 65 cm, and sometimes reaches 100 cm.

Mass fishing has led to the fact that its abundance in the river has significantly decreased. In recent years, attempts have been made to limit catch by introducing various prohibitions.

Fishing

Onon River, fishing on which is very popular among the local population, can not boast of crystal clear water. For most of the year the water is rather muddy, which limits the possibilities of fishing. A more transparent reservoir becomes closer to the autumn. At this time of year, fishermen go hunting with spinning. During the summer, the main type of tackle is the bottom fishing rod.

In still cold spring waters, burbot is caught well. To do this, use different types of baits, for example, dung worms. Also at this time of year it is easy to catch a chebach and a minnow. With the rise in temperature of the river water, you can start fishing for catfish. In local places it has a small weight - up to 4 kg. He has fatty and delicious meat. Well, the most tasty trophy of the fisherman is the Amur sazan. To catch him, you need to make a lot of effort, but the reward is worth it - because the weight of one specimen can reach up to 8 kilograms.

The cold climate makes sazana spawn at a later date. Here it occurs in June-July. At this time to catch this fish has little prospects. Because of the fast current, the local carp prefer to hide in natural shelters not far from the shore. The greatest chances to find this fish will be for those who choose to catch deep coastal areas with a slow current. The depth should be 5-7 m, and the distance from the shore - 3-4 meters.

For heavy carp to catch on the Onon River, heavy sinkers are not always suitable. If you catch near snags, then it is better to use a weaker lighter, preferably with a streamlined shape.

The best places for carp fishing are the remains of an ancient river bed (the so-called old people). They resemble small lakes. In the valley of the pond, there are a lot of old people.

Fisheries

Onone has only one fishing base - Yusen Tug. Before going there, it is necessary to find out whether there are available seats. If they are not, then you can stay in one of the settlements in which local residents rent out their lodging.
