Nesselbek Castle (Orlovka, Kaliningrad Region): hotel, restaurant, museum "Medieval Tortures and Punishments"

Nesselbek Castle is not a construction of the Middle Ages, but a modern building. It's just built in the old days. The castle stands at the road, at the entrance to the village of Orlovka (Kaliningrad region). On the way, while waiting for them to notice, two skeletons froze in the belts of fidelity. But we'll talk more about everything in the article.

The appearance and description of the castle

The castle of Nesselbek (Kaliningrad) is a building erected in full accordance with the requirements of medieval architecture. The architects managed to recreate the knight's castle with the help of ancient drawings - an exact copy of the fortress of the Teutonic Order. And, by the way, were awarded a diploma from the above-mentioned order - for the preservation of traditions.

As you know, the village of Orlovka (Kaliningrad) used to be a German settlement. In the XIX century there was the estate of Nesselbek, belonging to the noble family of Shenkendorf, who were from Tilsit. The farmstead was built in the beginning of the XIX century and included, in addition to the main building, buildings for storing grain and raising cattle.

The castle Nesselbek received its name from the stream. It means "nettle creek" in German. Indeed, it existed and flowed through the territory of the village, and its name, in turn, due to the nettle growing along the banks.

About this stream, by the way, there is a legend about a lion fish. Fished in the distant past fishermen from the sea fish and released a swim in the creek. Day and night prayed the fish of the villagers to release it back into the sea. And in exchange promised to give a source, but not simple, but with the best in the world beer. So it was or not, nobody knows, but in the castle its own brewery ....

Museum "Medieval Tortures and Punishments"

The size of this scary museum is not large - three spans on a narrow staircase up.

At the entrance stands the executioner - a man with a bad reputation for those times. People of this profession were afraid and despised: the executioners, as a rule, traded parts of bodies executed for magical rituals. In markets and markets, merchants gave them food for free, out of fear of touching their hands. And they took off their clothes from dead criminals. The executioner could leave his terrible post after he found himself a receiver.

In the halls one can consider the devices used by the master of the Middle Ages:

  • "Spanish boot" - was worn on the leg, crushed and broken bones.
  • Vice - in them the head of the condemned person was placed, and then it was squeezed;
  • "Nuremberg maiden" is an iron cabinet with outlines of a female body. On the inner surface of the doors of the cabinet were placed long nails. The condemned man went into the closet, the doors closed, and the nails stuck into different parts of the body.
  • Table for torture - the body "rolled" on rolls with spikes. And that the victim did not twitch, hands and feet straightened with shackles.
  • Pear - was injected into certain parts of the body. When the disclosure tore them up.
  • Knee crusher - crushed knee and elbow joints.
  • "Deadly chair" - a terrible device, covered with spikes in the amount of 500 to 1500, with straps, which recorded the victim. Sometimes under the chair a hearth was set up for the quick recognition of the convict.
  • The seat with the collar - the victim was put on the seat with the hands tied. An iron collar with a screw was put on his head. The executioner tightly twisted the screw, and the metal wedge located on the collar slowly penetrated the condemned's head, causing death.

These devices were used to kill a person or to make him crippled. For more "easy" punishments, there were other tools:

  • A shameful pillar - as punishment, the convicted person was mocked and humiliated by the crowd;
  • Mask of shame - was worn on grumpy wives and women who uttered swear words in public places;
  • Mantle of a drunkard - she was put on chronic alcoholics; It was a barrel turned upside down, in which the drunkard's favorite drinks were stored; Then it was conducted along the streets of the city for conviction and mockery.

And, of course, belts of fidelity. These devices appeared during the Crusades, so that the knights, leaving the family for a long time, did not worry about the fidelity of their wives. Later appeared belts of fidelity for men. Their main task was to prevent masturbation. By the way, today the belts of fidelity are still relevant: as an accessory for BDSM games.

The museum's exhibits are not originals - they are only mock-ups, reconstructed according to drawings and historical documents. But, as recognized by those who visited it, it becomes scary to see them.
