An important influence on the appearance in Minsk of such an important historical landmark was the architect Joseph Langbard. In 1934, he designed the building of the Government House and developed a project of the square in front of this building. Originally she was given the name of Lenin Square. It had the shape of a square. On its territory a monument was erected. Lenin, and on the north side there is a square for walking, which has a parterre look.

In the 1960s, the square acquired a rectangular shape, and around it was organized a circular movement of road transport. The open part of the square, located directly at the Government House, was intended for parking of cars. Here in those days there were parades.

The modern look of the city of Minsk (Independence Square especially) was received in the post-war years. The current name of the square was given in 1991. At that time, Belarus, like other republics of the USSR, gained independence. As a result of the work on the major reconstruction, a beautiful pedestrian zone, surrounded by various sculptural compositions and greenery, appeared here.

In 2002-2006 the area was again reconstructed. Ways of movement of vehicles were straightened, and the building of the shopping center "Stolitsa" and a parking lot were erected underground. Almost all the aboveground area of the square turned into a recreation area with a beautiful light and music fountain located on it.

How to get there?

It is possible to get to the central square by the city bus route №100. You can also take an interesting walking tour through the central part of the city of Minsk. It takes no more than 30 minutes to take a walk from the Oktyabrskaya metro station along the avenue. This path will definitely lead to this magnificent square.

You can use the trains of the Minsk subway to come to Independence Square (Minsk). The metro is located nearby. To visit the square, you need to go to the station "Lenin Square".

On this section of the city there is also the Metropolitan Metro Administration, erected in 1984. The project for the construction of the metro was designed by two well-known Belarusian architects (Kudryavtsev and Grigoriev). Nine stations represented the very first metro line, the total length of which was about 17 km.

On the square you can visit the magnificent park area, which includes fountains, beautiful flower gardens and benches. Here you can see the Red Church, near which there is the Nagasaki Bell, which appeared on this place in 2000. It was built in memory of the victims of the Chernobyl disaster.

Like the whole of Minsk, Independence Square is attractive for tourists with its landmark historical buildings. Here are the buildings of the former rich houses, which are brick multi-storey buildings erected in the beginning of the 20th century. On the walls you can see a considerable number of memorial plaques. One of them (1979) is devoted to an underground organization that worked in 1941-1942. There is a board dedicated to the Soviet academician-geodesist, who used to live here.

Interesting for tourists is the sculpture "Archangel Michael". Also here is the hotel "Minsk". As before, a monument to Lenin, restored in 1945, rises on the square.

On the eponymous avenue, originating from Independence Square, lived the most respected people in the country: artists, scientists, politicians and actors. This, as noted above, is evidenced by numerous commemorative plaques attached to the walls of houses. It is rich in architectural structures and historically significant events in Minsk.
