Steel ropes - general definition and basic parameters

Steel zinced rope is a twisted steel wire product. At its manufacturing thin rods (threads) of various thickness and quality are used. All of them are twisted in a spiral in one strand. Any rope consists of several twisted strands of the same type and a metal or organic core. The core is located in the center of the cable, fills its emptiness and prevents neighboring wires from passing through. Impregnated with an anti-corrosion grease, it protects the inner layer from corrosion when bending the cable. The wire used can be galvanized or uncoated, have a round or shaped section. Its tensile strength is in the range of 900 to 3500 N / mm2. The number of strands in the rope, which are located around the core, determine its structure.

Steel ropes differ from each other in the form of cross-section, physicomechanical characteristics of wires and have a large number of designs. The flexibility and rigidity of the rope depend on the grade of material, the type of core, the direction of the wire, the number of wires in the strand. The more wires used, the more flexible the rope.

Depending on operating conditions, steel ropes are divided into traction, reinforcement, lifting, cargo, towing, shaft, bearing, etc. Widely used these products have been in many industries and municipal services. Steel ropes are a load-carrying element of transport, road-building, load-lifting structures and machines. The quality of these devices ensures the safety of the use of all lifting mechanisms.

According to the structural feature, the steel rope (GOST 3241-80 or DIN 3051) distinguishes the following types:

  1. Single spike. Such a cable consists of one strand. He has wires of one diameter of the suite in one layer (or several interlayers) around one wire.
  2. A double whiff. This rope consists of several strands that make up one or two layers, and are located around the core.
  3. The triple whistle. It consists of three strands, which are formations among themselves and do not have a core.

Strand casting can be a cross, one-sided or combined, left or right direction, unwinding or non-twisting torsion. Inside the strands of wire have a point, linear or point-linear touch.

Steel ropes are characterized by the following formula: N * M + L, where N is the number of strands, M is the number of wires in one strand, L is the number of cores in the rope. For example, a record of 6 * 36 + 1 means that the rope consists of six strands, each containing 36 wires, and one core.

Steel cables must be stored in coiled dense rows on reels (reels) or rolled into small bays. From the impact of an aggressive environment, the bay with the cable should be protected by a canvas bag, located on a wooden pallet (in sunny weather, the casing is removed). Excessive bends are harmful to the cable. Therefore, the packaging for him is selected carefully. If the rope is properly stored, the life of the product is not limited.
