Mercury lamps - new light sources

Most produced and used in the economy of tubular fluorescent lamps, which radiation in the ultraviolet range of the electric arc in mercury vapor is converted into a visible optical layer by means of a phosphor layer. They consist of a glass bulb, at the ends of which the electrodes legs are soldered. An inert gas is introduced into the flask , which facilitates ignition. Small mercury lamps are manufactured in small quantities and have a reduced mercury content compared to conventional fluorescent long luminaires. All fluorescent light sources have a longer lifetime compared to others.

Mercury lamps are divided into the following types:

- Discharge devices for low-pressure lighting, which include conventional fluorescent and compact fluorescent;

- discharge light sources of high and ultra-high pressure, these are, in fact, mercury lamps of high and ultra-high pressure, metal halide, mercury-xenon and others.

The device of light sources of high pressure

High-pressure mercury lamps are mostly manufactured in the form of DRL lamps. They have an elliptical shaped glass flask. Inside the built-in tubular quartz torch. It is made of transparent quartz glass. There are four electrodes in the flask. Its internal space is filled with inert gases in a strict proportion. It also contains mercury, which can have the appearance of a ball or a deposit on the walls of the burner. Instead of air, nitrogen is pumped into the bulb. On the inside of the glass is a layer of phosphor, which, taking ultraviolet radiation, turns it into visible light. The gas discharge that occurs when the voltage is applied is a light source.

Similarly, mercury lamps of ultrahigh pressure are arranged. Their flasks can be covered with a matte or mirror coating. They are equipped with a throttle, the purpose of which is to reduce the supplied electric current. Without the throttle, they instantly fail. After applying the voltage, mercury lamps gain brightness for six to eight minutes. In the same period, mercury in it passes into a gaseous state. After that, the lamp starts to work in the put burning mode.

Arrangement of arc mercury light sources

This is one type of gas discharge devices for high-pressure lighting. They differ from all the others with special additives. They can have warm, neutral and cold light. Arc mercury lamps, in which radiating additives have been introduced, or high-pressure metal halide lamps are used for general and special lighting, and also installed in various devices and devices. They are compact powerful and effective light sources that are used in the lighting ramps of railroads, quarries and other large open areas. They are also used to illuminate scenes, studios, industrial buildings, with their help, perform external illumination of architectural sights. They are used in searchlights with special optics.
