Medvezhyegorsk (Karelia) is a small nice town, which is located on the Onega Lake. Up until 1938 this place was called the Bear Mountain. The railway station, where they make a short stop of the train from Moscow, St. Petersburg and Petrozavodsk, is called now. The city is one of the industrial centers of Karelia, located in the north-west of Povenets Bay. It is surrounded by picturesque rocks and low hills, which are covered with dense coniferous forests.

City `s history

In the distant past in place of Medvezhyegorsk rustling impenetrable forest, which was inhabited by wild animals. It was a swampy terrain. And today one of the streets of the city is called Bolotnaya.

Medvezhyegorsk began to erect with the beginning of construction on the river Kumsa in 1794 the sawmill. Owners of it were Andreev, Gagarinov and Zakhariev brothers, natives of Tolvuya village. Gradually, the sole owners of the plant were the Zakharyevs. Up to now, this enterprise has not survived, there is no trace of its building. But the two-storey wooden house of Zakharyevs survived.

After the Russian Empire entered the First World War (1914), there was an urgent need to build a railroad leading to the Barents Sea. The construction of the Murmansk port, two ports in Sorok and Kemi, as well as the railway began in 1915. The latter was to connect Petrograd with Romanov-on-Murman.

Station "Bear Mountain" was built on the uninhabited and uninhabited shore of the lake. When the station gradually appeared a village that had the same name. In 1915 a wharf appeared on the shore of the lake.

In 1930, the Soviet government made a historic decision on the construction of the White Sea-Baltic Canal. The village and station "Bear Mountain" and became an administrative center. As you know, the channel was put into operation in August 1933. Five years later, by decision of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, this working settlement received the status of an urban settlement and the name Medvezhyegorsk (Karelia).

During the Second World War in the area of the city, fighting was conducted for three years by Finnish and Soviet troops.

Unexpected fame

Today many tourists are attracted by the Republic of Karelia. G. Medvezhyegorsk was widely known in the 90 years of the XX century. In 1984, director V. Menchov shot a film here, which later became very popular. His name is "Love and Doves". The house, in which the film the main character lived with his family, was not preserved.

City Museum

VP Ershov - a teacher of a boarding school № 4 - in 1962 created a school museum of local lore in such a beautiful city as Medvezhyegorsk (Karelia). Initially, the collection was made up of household items of citizens, icons, embroideries, as well as elements of national costumes.

The status of the municipal museum was in 1991. It is housed in an ancient building, which is an architectural monument. Once upon a time there was a hotel of employees of the White Sea Canal.

Railway station

It is located in the central area of the city. The building was built in 1916. Almost immediately after the completion of construction, the first trains began to depart from here.

This is an original structure made of wood with a spire and a tent roof. It was rebuilt many times and reconstructed, but today it retained its original appearance.

The author of the project was the civil engineer RM Gabe. The building was built even when the settlement was not a city.

Monument to the Heroes of WWII

As in all Russia, residents of the city are honored by the heroes of WWII. Medvezhyegorsk (Karelia), whose photo you see in our article, has its own monument in honor of the fallen heroes. The monument is installed on the grave of soldiers, where 1,015 fighters who gave their lives for their Motherland are buried.

He is in the park along Kirov Street. This is an obelisk of black marble with a memorable inscription. Grateful residents of the city bring flowers to him, and from here all the festive processions begin on Victory Day.

The monument in a solemn atmosphere was opened in the summer of 1958. The initiator of its creation was the city administration. Today it is located on Dzerzhinsky Street, and was first installed in the park of Railwaymen.

Church

This small church is located on Artemyev street. The modest wooden building is painted in light blue color, parishioners often come here to pray. The pastor of the church is A. A. Ryndin.

Sandarmokh

Another memorable place, which will always remind us of the huge sacrifices, which we must not forget. This huge forest tract, which became the place of mass shootings of the NKVD, is located fifteen kilometers from Bear Mountain and nineteen kilometers from the village of Povenets.

In an area of about ten hectares, more than 9,500 people of fifty-eight nationalities were buried, which were killed in 1938. This is the largest in the north-west of our country, the burial place of victims of Stalin's repression.

Mostly they were settlers and prisoners from the Solovetsky camps. But there are among the victims and local residents. To date, 236 firing holes have been discovered on this vast territory. The first burials were found in the summer of 1997.

Karelia (Medvezhyegorsk): rest

If you like skiing, then we want to make you happy. In Medvezhyegorsk there is a well-equipped ski slope. There are two tracks on it, the length of which is from 350 to 400 meters. In addition, there are trails for children and for professionals.

Love these places and anglers. For them, there are built bases and hotels. One of them is on the shore of the lake. There are only three rooms here, a cozy hall. In this hotel lovers of winter fishing like to stop. Ice fishing in the described places is fascinating. This is largely due to the presence of stone lud. You can catch here a whitefish and a waist, a smelt and burbot, a perch (next to the ludas), pike perch and bream.

Hunters of the hunt (in the season) will have a great rest. In autumn the goose sits on the field, in November a wild boar appears on the potato fields, there are grouse and grouse currents, ducks, bears, wolves, moose.
