Limassol Zoo: a description of how to get there, features, mode of operation and interesting facts

Zoo Limassol - this is the favorite place in Cyprus for families with kids. Here come locals and numerous tourists who spend among lovely little animals all day long. A distinctive feature of the zoo is the fact that it is surprisingly comfortable for guests and animals. For all created conditions that allow both animals and people to contact to the great pleasure of each other.

Zoo of Limassol: description (common)

The zoo is located in the city garden, which is quite easy to reach by public transport. Currently, there are more than fourteen species of animals, reptiles and thirty-two species of birds. The pride of the zoo is the reserve of mouflons, which once became the symbol of the island of Cyprus.

Dr. Lambrou, the director of the zoo, spends a lot of time here and is doing his best to make the Limassol zoo develop and the animals feel comfortable. For this purpose a few years ago the menagerie underwent a small restructuring, and now it is the real pride of Cyprus. Almost all the zoo is finished with natural materials (jute rope, stone and wood), therefore literally from the first steps visitors are immersed in the atmosphere of nature. This helps children not just watch the animals in the enclosures, but also with interest to study the information on them, presented on the stands near each fence. It should be noted that the small visitors in the zoo are very convenient, because each enclosure is made taking into account the growth of children. They do not have to drag on or ask for parents to see another funny little animal.

The history of the zoo

Local residents still remember how the zoo of Limassol opened. In 1956 it was created on a voluntary basis, and most of the guests were brought by the Cypriots themselves. The favorite of the children was the monkey Julia, besides her, there were several species of animals and birds in the zoo. In those years, the zoo little resembled the beautiful and comfortable territory that it represents now. Originally it was a small menagerie, located in a corner of the city park, but by the seventies the number of animals had increased significantly, and the nursery had turned into a real zoo.

From the seventies to the nineties of the last century the zoo was experiencing a serious decline in connection with the division of the island into Greek and Turkish. Most of the animals died from hunger and disease. And only since 1993 the zoo's revival began, where a large number of new animals were brought, and the territory completely changed its appearance, turning into a real zone for family recreation.

Description of the territory

Almost all the territory of the zoo is covered with green plantations and lovely lawns, where you can sit down for a rest. In addition, in the shade of the avenues there are shops and gazebos, where restless kids like to hide.

In many corners of the zoo fountains with water are built. Here you can wash your hands and drink (the water is clean and suitable for drinking). In case of unforeseen situations, you can go to the medical station, and young mothers have the opportunity to feed the baby in specially equipped rooms.

After perestroika, people with limited mobility feel comfortable in the zoo. For them, there are wide paths and lifts. If you are hungry, then you will find a cafe "Flamingo". It boasts a sea view, and the menu includes simple and tasty dishes suitable for adults and children. It's great that you can come to the zoo with your food and settle on the grass in the picnic area.

For kids in the zoo arranged colorful playground. It has a special coating that allows you to play barefoot. All buildings are made of environmentally friendly materials.

Zoo Training Center

The Limassol Zoo pays great attention to educational programs. Schoolchildren and kindergartners come here for open lessons in biology. They can learn about the various representatives of the animal kingdom of the island, Australia, America and Asia. To make the classes more interesting, the director Lambrou ordered to build a small amphitheater. It is located next to the enclosures, which allows you to listen to lectures about animals and watch them in parallel.

Mini-farm and a contact zoo

What do all the kids love without exception? Of course, iron and feed the animals. In the zoo they will have such an opportunity. The mini-farm houses poultry and animals. Here you can get to know closely the goats, turkeys, lambs, donkeys and zebu. Kids are given a chance to ride animals, and then feed them with various delicacies bought here.

Conditions of keeping animals in cages

Since the zoo does not have a large territory, many animals coexist in the aviary. They are grouped according to different signs and do not interfere with each other. This feature gives the zoo some zest, because visitors with great interest observe the quarrels and friendship of some animals. A look at the zoo is on that: in the aviaries inhabited by monkeys, antelopes, kangaroos, mouflons, marmots and ground squirrels. And this is not a complete list of all the guests of the zoo.

All enclosures are quite spacious and allow animals to feel in their usual habitat.

House of Reptiles

An entire building is reserved for these representatives of the animal world. In addition to numerous species of snakes, there are lizards, monitor lizards, and even caiman, which lives in a special basin. Many visitors in this part of the zoo spend most of the time, because such a variety of reptiles can not be found anywhere else in Cyprus.
